Minor League Recap - 4/30/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-3

Tony Abreu - 1 for 6, 2 K's
James Loney - 1 for 5
Matt Kemp - 1 for 4, BB
Andy LaRoche - 2 for 3, 2B, R, 2 BB, CS, E

The bullpen let the 51's down, allowing a run in the 9th and 3 more in the 11th. Eric Hull blew his first save of the season and Hamulack drew his first loss. Abreu is struggling, collecting just 1 hit in his last 3 games. However, he's still hitting .344. LaRoche had a nice game and his average is up to .247. Loney is down to .263 and Kemp is at .304. Greg Miller gets the start tomorrow night at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 9-6

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 3, R, BB
Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, K
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, HR (6), 2 RBI, R, K, E

Megrew earned his 2nd win of the season as the Suns offense heated up. His ERA on the season is 3.76. Chin Lung Hu drew just his 3rd walk of the season and is maintaining his average at .337. Paul hit his 2nd HR in 3 games and has hit safely in the past 10. Raglani hit his 6th shtonk, his only hit in the past 4 games. Still, his OPS is 1.067. Dunlap's 0'fer lowered his average to .205. Jacksonville finishes up their series with Montgomery tomorrow morning at 8:05am.

High A - Inland Empire lost 1-0

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 4
Lucas May - 0 for 3, K
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 3, K
Jamie Hoffman - 0 for 3, 2 K's
Travis Denker - 1 for 3, K

The real story of this game was Modesto pitcher Brandon Hynick, who pitched a CG shutout and has not allowed an earned run this season. The 66ers were held to just 2 hits (Denker singled and Harper doubled). Overshadowed by this was James McDonald, who had a strong outing. He allowed just 1 ER on 2 hits and 3 walks over 5 innings while striking out 7. Over his last 3 outings (16 IP), he's allowed just 4 ER while striking out 20. The Empire heads to Lake Elsinore for a 3 game set, starting tomorrow at 7:07pm.

Low A - Great Lakes won 1-0

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4
Josh Bell - 0 for 4, K
Carlos Santana - 1 for 3, BB
David Sutherland - 0 for 4, 2 K's

Clayton Kershaw - 6 IP, 6 Hits, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's

Another strong outing from Kershaw, who's allowed just 2 ER in his last 4 starts. On the year, he's sporting an ERA of 1.08 and he's struck out 35 batters in 25 innings. The struggling Loons' offense managed only 1 run, when Francisco Lizarraga walked, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a bad throw and was cashed in by a Matt Berezay sac fly. Santana raised his average to .125. Berezay had the scoring fly ball, but also went 3 for 3 with a double. Great Lakes stays in the Quad Cities for another game tomorrow at 4pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/29/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 3-1

Tony Abreu - 1 for 5, R, SB
James Loney - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Matt Kemp - 1 for 4, 2B
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 4

Hong Chih Kuo - 2 IP, Hit, ER, BB, 3 K's
Yhency Brazoban - 1 IP, Hit, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

A pitchers' duel in the PCL is rare, but it happens. Hong Chih Kuo made his first rehab start and was on a strict pitch count, making only 30 pitches (20 for strikes). DJ Houlton allowed 2 ER in 5 innings, followed by scoreless frames from Brazoban and Jed Clampett. Abreu stole his first base of the season, while Kemp collected his first double in Sin City. LaRoche and Loney singled, but they're still struggling. If LaRoche manages to pick up his offense, he could force his way onto LA as the starting first baseman. Vegas continues their homestand with a 4 game series against Sacramento, starting tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville lost 7-2

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 5, K
Xavier Paul - 3 for 5, 2 K's
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 4, 2 K's
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB

The Suns scored a run in the first, but starter Alvis Ojeda let the lead slip away, allowing the tying run in the 4th and 4 more in the 5th without managing to get out of the inning. Hu has a modest 5 game hitting streak and is batting .337. Xavier Paul is on a hot streak, hitting safely in his last 9 and now up to .298. Raglani now has 15 walks in 22 games, with an OPS of 1.055. Dunlap is only hitting .216. Jacksonville continues their series with Montgomery tomorrow at 8:05am.

High A - Inland Empire won 6-4

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 4, R
Lucas May - 2 for 5, 3B, HR (8), 5 RBI, 2 R, K
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 4, 3 K's, E
Travis Denker - 2 for 4, RBI, K

Javy Guerra - 6 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's

Yet another nailbiter in the low minors. The 66ers scored 3 in the first to take the early lead. But in the 7th, Modesto evened it up after starter Javy Guerra had his strongest outing of the season. Like the Dodgers, IE went to extra innings. Russell Mitchell's fielding error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base. After a sacrifice bunt and a single, the 66ers found themselves down by 1. A strikeout and a caught stealing ended the inning. Adam Godwin drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 10th. De Jesus Jr sacrificed him to second. Ryan Rogowski reached on a single to 2nd, keeping Godwin from scoring. Rogowski stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. And with one swing of the bat, Lucas May sent all the Empire fans home happy, clubbing the game winning HR. A great finish, much like the Dodgers' game. The 66ers wrap up their series with Modesto tomorrow at 11am.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 5-3

Preston Mattingly - 0 for 3, BB, K
Josh Bell - 0 for 3, RBI, K, HBP
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 4, K, E
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, 2 K's, HBP

Josh Wall - 5.1 IP, 6 Hits, 4 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's
Miguel Sanfler - 1 IP, 0 Hits, ER, 3 BB, K

Wall had another 6 strikeout/0 walk performance, but allowed 4 ER and got the loss. He now has 17 K's and 3 walks on the year. Miguel Sanfler's control performed a disappearing act and he now has as many walks as innings pitched. Francisco Lizarraga had 3 hits, raising his average to .364. Bridget Hunt had a pair of singles. Most everyone else struggled. Trayvon Robinson had the day off. The Loons head to Quad Cities to begin a new series and hopefully a new winning streak tomorrow at 3:30pm.

Abreu managed to reach base without a hit, while Kemp singled and walked. Loney smacked his 4th double of the year and raised his batting average to .267. LaRoche's 0'fer dropped his average to .230. Vegas concludes their series with Tacoma tomorrow at noon.

Double A - Jacksonville won 3-2

Chin Lung Hu - 2 for 4, 2 2B's
Xavier Paul - 2 for 4, Solo HR (1), RBI, R, K, CS
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 2, BB
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K's

Jon Meloan - 1 IP, 2 Hits, ER, BB, K

The Suns won a close game as Chin Lung Hu collected his 8th multi-hit games in the last 10. He raised his average to .344 and hit his 10th and 11th doubles, placing him second in the league in that category. Xavier Paul hit his first homer of the year in the first inning. Dunlap did what he does best: drew a walk. Raglani kept his streak of reaching base safely alive despite an 0 for 3 line. Suns' starter Eric Cyr went a strong 6, allowing just 1 ER. Matt Riley pitched 2 scoreless before Meloan came in for the save. He surrendered his 3rd ER and 2nd walk of the season but still managed to close the game out. Jax plays the Biscuits tomorrow at noon.

High A - Inland Empire won 6-3

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 2 for 4, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, E
Lucas May - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 4, RBI, 2 K's
Blake DeWitt - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 R
Travis Denker - 1 for 3, R, BB, K

Brent Leach - 1.1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's

Marlon Arias pitched a good 5 innings, earning his first win of the season. He allowed 2 ER on 7 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Brent Leach picked up the save, pitching a perfect 1.1 innings and picking a runner off 1st. He's shown a propensity to catch runners napping on the basepaths. De Jesus Jr picked up his 3rd triple of the year, though he also committed his 6th error. Blake DeWitt had a nice game, hitting his 7th double. May's hit streak ended at 13 games, with his average dropping to .340. Mitchell's average also suffered as he went hitless, lowering to .324. The 66ers hosts Modesto for two more contests, tomorrow's being a 2pm game.

Low A - Great Lakes won 11-9

Trayvon Robinson - 2 for 6, 2B, 4 RBI, R, SB
Preston Mattingly - 4 for 6, 2 2B's, RBI, 2 R, K, SB
Josh Bell - 3 for 5, HR (1), 3 RBI, R
Carlos Santana - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 R, K, E
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, R, BB
David Sutherland - 1 for 4, R, BB, K

Another game, another thriller. The Loons fell behind in the first inning when starter Thomas Melgarejo allowed 2 runs. Great Lakes scored a pair to tie it up in the top of the 5th, but the Lumberkings scored 4 in the bottom of the inning. The Loons came back to tie again, with 2 runs in both the 6th and 7th innings, but Clinton scored twice in the bottom of the 7th to pull ahead 8-6. Neither team scored in the 8th. Then in the 9th, Josh Bell led off with a single. Carlos Santana forced out Bell at 2nd but went to 2nd himself on a throwing error. Van Slyke then lined out to 2nd to leave the Loons with their final out to work with. Matt Berezay then doubled to cut the lead to a single run. After a pitching change, David Sutherland walked and Elian Herrera was hit by a pitch to load the bases for last night's hero Trayvon Robinson. And he delivered, crushing a bases clearing double to put Great Lakes ahead 10-8. Mattingly lined his 4th hit into center to score Robinson and after Eduardo Perez singled, Josh Bell flew out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Mattingly committed his 11th error of the season to allow the leadoff man to reach. That was followed by another single and two groundouts, the second of which scored a run to bring Clinton within 2 runs. But the final batter struck out swinging and the Loons pulled off another comeback win. Great Lakes looks to extend their win streak to 5 tomorrow in the finale with Clinton at 11am.

Minor League Recap - 4/27/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-4

Tony Abreu - 0 for 5, R, K
Matt Kemp - 2 for 4, HR (2), 2 RBI, R, BB, 2 K's, SB
James Loney - 1 for 4, RBI, BB, Picked Off
Andy LaRoche - 0 for 5, 2 K's
Delwyn Young - 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB

Yhency Brazoban - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's
Eric Hull - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, BB, 0 K's

Matt Kemp hit his second homer in as many nights, but the 51's offense couldnt make a comeback. Kemp hit a 2 run blast in the 7th to right center, the same spot he hit to last night. Only a matter of time before he's back with the big club. Abreu went 0 for 5 but he's still hitting .387. Loney is at .253 while LaRoche is at .243. Brazoban pitched a perfect inning in his first rehab appearance in Vegas. Eric Hull lowered his ERA to 1.38. LV again hosts Tacoma tomorrow night at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville lost 12-5

Chin Lung Hu - 3 for 5, 3B, RBI, R
Xavier Paul - 1 for 3, 3B, RBI, K
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 4, RBI
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K's

Justin Orenduff - 3 IP, 3 Hits, 4 ER, 2 BB, K

D Ray's prospects Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac hit back to back Homeruns in the first inning and the Suns never recovered. Duff-Man recovered, retiring 9 of the next 10 batters before he was pulled. This was his worst outing of the season, but he's still building strength after coming back from injury. Hu's the man! Another multi-hit performance, clubbing his 2nd triple of the year and raising his batting average to .337. Paul also tripled and is batting .267.Dunlap is struggling, batting .221. Raglani reached base yet again and extended his streak to 16 games. Jacksonville looks to pull back even in the series tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 3-1

Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, K
Lucas May - 1 for 4, 2B, PO
Russell Mitchell - 2 for 4
Travis Denker - 0 for 3, E

A pitchers' duel ended in Modesto's favor, as they scored a run in both the 8th and 9th innings to earn the win. Jesus Castillo pitched a nice game, allowing just 1 run over 5.2 innings. Jordan Pratt and Ramon Troncoso each allowed runs in relief. May hit safely in his 13th straight game, connecting on his 6th double of the year. He's hitting .356. Mitchell's 2 hit performance raised his average to .343. Denker went hitless and committed his 2nd error of the season. DeWitt's average is coming close to the Mendoza line. The Empire hosts Modesto again tomorrow at 7pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_27_modafa_inlafa_1

Low A - Great Lakes played a doubleheader

Game 1 - Great Lakes won 4-2

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, 2B, K, SB
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 2, BB, K
Josh Bell - 1 for 3, R, 2 K's
David Sutherland - 0 for 3
Carlos Santana - 1 for 3, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, K
Scott Van Slyke - 2 for 3, R, K, SB

Steven Johnson - 5.2 IP, 6 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's

Johnson had a nice outing, earning his first victory of the season. I expect him to keep his walk total low as the season progresses. Carlos Santana hit his first HR of the year, raising his BA to a whopping .100. Robinson hit his 2nd double of the year and stole his 6th base. Mattingly FINALLY drew a walk, though is average dropped to .156. Josh Bell raised his to .214. Van Slyke's multi-hit effort had him hitting .244.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_27_swmafx_cliafx_1

Game 2 - Great Lakes won 7-4

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB
Preston Mattingly - 2 for 4, K, SB
Josh Bell - 1 for 4, K
Kenley Jansen - 1 for 4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 R, K

The Loons have a 2 game winning streak! In the minor leagues, doubleheaders are played as 2 7 inning games. Down by 2 in the top of the 7th, Jansen hit a 2 run HR to tie the game. Then with 2 outs and a man on first, a wild pitch was followed by a Robinson singled that put the Loons ahead. But in the bottom of the 7th, a pair of singles was followed by a throwing error by second baseman Justin Fuller which tied the game. So in the top of the 9th, which was technically "extra innings," Robinson played the hero again, drawing a bases loaded walk to put Great Lakes ahead. That was followed by a 2 run error which gave them a 3 run lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Doug Brooks walked the first two batters, bringing the tying run to the plate. But the runners would be stranded, as Brooks retired the next 3 batters. Mattingly raised his average to .184 and stole his first base of the season. Jansen, like Santana in the first game, hit his first shtonk of the year. Robinson stole base #7. The series continues tomorrow at 3pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/26/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 9-3

Tony Abreu - 2 for 4, 2 R, K
Matt Kemp - 2 for 4, 3B, HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 R
James Loney - 2 for 4, RBI, R, K
Andy LaRoche - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Delwyn Young - 1 for 4, 2B, K

Greg Miller - 4 IP, 2 Hits, 3 R (2 ER), 4 BB, 4 K's, 2 HBP, WP

While the 51's won the game, the big story was Greg Miller. Through the first 4 innings, Miller was brilliant. He extended his hitless innings streak to 11.1 innings and was blowing hitters away with mid 90s heat. But in the top of the 5th, Mike Morse led off with a single and it all went downhill from there. He walked the next batter, wild pitched them to second and third and then walked the bases loaded. After a mound visit from Kenny Howell, Miller induced a groundball to short. But Tomas Perez misplayed it and a run scored. Miller proceded to hit the next batter and that was followed by a run scoring single. Miller was then removed from the game. Luis Gonzalez (No relation) struck out the next batter and then came a much needed 4-6-3 double play. Now I'm not sure if the hit shook Miller, but it's possible that he was trying too hard after he allowed that first single. Nevertheless, he was brilliant for 4 innings and is allowing just a .111 batting average to opposing hitters. Tony Abreu raised his average to .414, while Kemp hit the first pitch he saw over the right-center wall and added a triple. Loney also had a pair of hits while LaRoche got his 0'fer on. LV's series with Tacoma continues tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville had the day off

High A - Inland Empire lost 5-4

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 4, 3B, BB, E
Travis Denker - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Lucas May - 1 for 5, 2 K's, CS
Russell Mitchell - 1 for 5, 2B, R, K
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, BB, K

The 66ers came up just short, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the 9th. De Jesus Jr hit his 2nd triple of the season, adding a walk. Lucas May extended his hitting streak to 12 games and is currently hitting .360. Russell Mitchell clubbed his 8th double, while Travis Denker is hitting .300. Blake DeWitt struck out in the 9th with 1 out and the tying run on third. DeWitt is really struggling, hitting just .214 thus far. On the bump, Miguel Pinango allowed 3 ER in 6 innings. Cory Wade pitched 2 innings in relief, allowing a solo HR. His ERA is 1.08. IE returns home to host Modesto starting tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes had the day off

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Minor League Recap - 4/25/07

Triple A - Las Vegas was off today

Double A - Jacksonville lost 13-12

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 6, RBI, K
Xavier Paul - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, R, BB, K
Anthony Raglani - 2 for 4, 2B, HR (5), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB
Cory Dunlap DNP

Mike Megrew - 6 IP, 14 Hits, 11 R (7 ER), 3 BB, 4 K's

A slugfest capped off the West Tenn series, with 9 runs scored in the last 2 innings, but the Suns fell just a run short in the end. Megrew had a very shaky outing with a few defensive miscues around him, but I'm hoping he didnt make too many pitches. I expect him to possibly skip his next start. Catcher AJ Ellis came in to pitch the final 2 innings, allowing a pair of runs. At the dish, Raglani kept the XBH's coming, with his 6th double and 5th HR of the year. His SLG is back up to .742 and he's reached base in 15 straight. Paul had a nice game, hitting his 5th double and drawing his 11th walk of the year. However, he still doesnt have a HR this season and is slugging just .333. Hu's average is down to .321 and the only criticism I have of him thus far is he's drawn just 2 walks in 18 games. Hopefully he'll work on taking pitches and getting deep in the count. Jacksonville takes tomorrow off to travel home and opens up a 5 game set with Montgomery, starting Friday at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 4-2

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 5, RBI, 3 K's
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, K
Lucas May - 1 for 4, RBI
Travis Denker - 1 for 1
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 1

James McDonald - 6 IP, 2 Hits, ER, 0 BB, 7 K's

A brilliant outing from McDonald was wasted by the 66ers inability to score runs. McDonald, who allowed 9 ER in his first two outings (7.1 innings), has allowed just 3 in his last two outings (11 innings). After a double was cashed in by a sac fly in the first, McDonald allowed only 2 baserunners over the next 5 innings. He began his career as a hitter and he's still just 22. No word on his stuff. Mario Alvarez allowed 3 runs in his inning of work and Brent Leach wriggled out of 2 hits and 2 walks to work a scoreless 8th. Lucas May extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his base-reaching streak to 13. He's batting .370. On the flip side, he allowed his 8th passed ball of the year and must continue to improve his defense behind the plate. De Jesus and DeWitt are hitting under .250, while Denker and Mitchell are hitting .308 and .344 respectively. The Empire ends their series with Stockton tomorrow at 7pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/24/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-5

Tony Abreu - 4 for 5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, R
James Loney - 0 for 4, BB, 2 K's
Delwyn Young - 1 for 5, RBI

Matt "The Billionaire" White allowed 3 runs in the 8th to earn his first loss of the year. Abreu was a homer short of the cycle and raised his average to .409. Loney's average dropped to .240. Delwyn Young's is down to .254. Joe Mays allowed 3 runs in 5 innings before being replaced by Travis Smith, who pitched a perfect 6th. Casey Hoorelbeke came in for the 7th and tossed a scoreless frame. Then in the 8th, down 3-2, Choo Freeman led off with a walk, followed by Kelly Stinnett being hit by a pitch. After a pitching change, Larry Barnes hit an RBI single and Tomas Perez sacrifiec Barnes and Stinnett to 2nd and 3rd. Then Abreu collected his 4th hit of the game, his 3rd triple of the season, plating both runners. But with a 5-3 lead, White came in and after recording an out, he allowed a walk and 2 singles, followed by an error and a squeeze play to put the Rivercats ahead for good. After a travel day, the 51's host Tacoma, starting Thursday at 7:11pm.

Jon Meloan - IP, Hit, ER, BB, 0 K's

It took 13 innings but the Suns pulled it out. Jon Meloan blew his first save and walked his first batter of the season. The game was tied 2-2 going into the 10th, when Wilkin Ruan singled, was sacrificed to second base and driven in by "Guess Hu" (I'm going to trademark that). But with 2 outs, Meloan allowed an RBI double which tied the game. Then in the 13th, Jacksonville scored twice on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch. Brian Akin, who pitched 3 hitless innings, earned the win. Anthony Raglani extended his streak of reaching base to 14 games. Cory Dunlap has walked in each of the past 5 games. Raglani, Dunlap and Xavier Paul all have 10 walks on the season. The Suns finish up their series in West Tenn tomorrow at 9am.

High A - Inland Empire won 4-3

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 4, R, HBP, SB
Travis Denker - 1 for 4, R, K
Lucas May - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI, R, BB, K
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 4, RBI, R, 2 K's
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 3, RBI, K

Javy Guerra - 5 IP, 4 Hits, 3 ER, 5 BB, 4 K's
Ramon Troncoso - 1.2 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

The 66ers scored 4 runs in the first inning and held on to win by a single run. Javy Guerra is still having trouble harnessing his stuff, as evidenced by his 17 walks in 15.1 innings. Jordan Pratt, Jacobo Meque and Troncoso combined for 4 innings of scoreless relief. Lucas May drilled his 5th double of the season and hit safely in his 10th straight game. The Empire plays a morning game against Stockton tomorrow at 10:35am.

Low A - Great Lakes won 2-1

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Josh Bell - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 K's
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, K

Clayton Kershaw - 6 IP, 3 Hits, ER, BB, 12 K's

Great Lakes won in dramatic fashion, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th. Francisco Lizarraga started it off with a single, which was followed by a single from Matt Berezay. After a passed ball advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Josh Bell singled in Lizarraga. Then Eduardo Perez hit a sac fly to center that was misplayed, scoring Berezay and ending the game. Clayton Kershaw set a career high in strikeouts and walked just one, a very encouraging sign after his disastrous debut. In the 2nd inning, Kershaw allowed the first HR of his professional career (In his 52nd inning) and that seemed to wake him up. After that, he allowed just 2 weak hits and flat out dominated. His fastball reached 96 in the game. The hitters in general are still struggling, but hopefully a comeback win like this can spark a fire in their bats. After a travel day, the Loons begin a series in Clinton, Thursday at 3pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/23/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 4-3

Tony Abreu - 1 for 5, R, K, E
James Loney - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K's
Delwyn Young - 0 for 3, BB, 3 K's, HBP

Greg Miller - 0 IP, 0 Hits, ER, 4 BB, 0 K's
Eric Hull - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's

The 51's jumped out to an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the 3rd inning, but Greg Miller walked a batter in to tie the game in the 7th and Tony Abreu's fielding error scored the winning run for the Rivercats with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th. Not a great day for the hitters, as Andy LaRoche had the night off. Abreu's average lowered to .377, Loney's to .254 and Young's to .259. Sergio Garcia hit the 3 run HR that would account for all of Vegas' offense, scoring Tomas Perez and Abreu in the process. DJ Houlton started for the 51's, tossing 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 2 solo homers. But Miller, in his first relief outing of the year, walked the bases loaded and a run in with 2 outs. Eric Hull was brilliant, throwing 2 perfect innings and lowering his ERA to 1.50. But in the 10th inning, Harold Eckert managed to throw just 1 pitch before injuring himself, prompting Luis Gonzalez to come in as an emergency replacement. After getting two outs, Gonzalez allowed an opposite field single to Daric Barton, who was subsequently replaced by a pinch runner. The runner stole second on a pitch in the dirt, prompting Gonzalez to intentionally walk the next batter in order to have a lefty on lefty matchup. But a groundball that was misplayed by Abreu plated the pinch runner and that was the game. LV looks to recover from the extra inning loss in the series finale, tomorrow at 11:35am.

Double A - Jacksonville won 5-2

Chin Lung Hu - 0 for 5, R
Xavier Paul - 1 for 3, R, 2 BB, K, SB
Cory Dunlap - 2 for 4, R, BB
Anthony Raglani - 2 for 3, 2B, BB, K, E

Jon Meloan - 2 IP, Hit, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's

Almost the antithesis of the Vegas game, Jacksonville got a 2 out, 3 run HR from John Lindsey to pull off an extra innings victory. Southpaw Eric Cyr allowed 2 runs through 6 innings before being relieved by BJ LaMura, who worked 2 scoreless. Jon Meloan pitched the 9th, allowed a single but struck out the side. The Suns got their first two runs in the 2nd inning, when Cory Dunlap singled and Marshall McDougall homered the both of them in. Then in the 10th, Juan Gonzalez (No, not that Juan Gonzalez) led off with a single. Hu, trying to bunt him over, reached base on a force out. After Wilkin Ruan grounded out, Xavier Paul was intentionally walked to bring up John Lindsey, who promptly homered to put the Suns ahead. Meloan worked a perfect 10th to earn his 3rd win of the season. Meloan lowered his ERA to 0.79 and now has an amazing 18 strikeouts and ZERO walks in 11.1 innings. Chin Lung Hu's 5 game hit streak came to an end, though he's still batting .329. However, Anthony Raglani extended his hit streak to 5 games and has reached base in more than the past 10 games. He also has collected an extra base hit in each of his last 5 games and is slugging .754 on the season. Cory Dunlap raised his batting average to .233 and Xavier Paul raised his to .250, also stealing his first bag of the year. The Suns are in West Tenn for 2 more games, playing tomorrow night at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 8-3

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 4, BB
Travis Denker - 1 for 3, RBI, R, BB, E
Lucas May - 1 for 4, Solo HR (7), PB
Russell Mitchell - 1 for 4, 2 K's

Yhency Brazoban - 1.2 IP, Hit, 3 R (0 ER), BB, 3 K's

The 66ers ended up splitting their series with Lancaster, scoring 16 runs in their wins and just 5 runs in their losses. Brazoban made his third rehab apperance, allowing 3 unearned runs and striking out 3. Marlon Arias relieved him and was hit pretty hard, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) in 5.1 innings. At the plate, Lucas May hit his league-leading 7th HR. However, it seems he's having trouble adjusting to catching, suffering his 7th passed ball of the year. Russell Mitchell extended his hit streak to 7 games. I know, lucky number 7. Blake DeWitt made a pinch hit appearance in the 8th inning but grounded out. After an off day tomorrow, the Empire starts a series in Stockton on Wednesday at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 5-0

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, K
Preston Mattingly - 1 for 3, K, 2 E's
Josh Bell - 1 for 3, E
David Sutherland - 0 for 3, 2 K's
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3, K
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 3, K

Just as quickly as they had heated up, the Loons' bats cooled off. Held to just 4 hits, Great Lakes was shut out for the 4th time this season. Michael Gardner earned his first loss of the season, allowing 4 runs in 4 innings. Jesus Rodriguez allowed an unearned run in 3 innings of work followed by 2 hitless frames from Miguel Ramirez. Preston Mattingly committed errors number 9 and 10, leading me to ask "when are they going to move him to the outfield?" Josh Bell committed his 8th error, apparently trying to keep pace with Mattingly. Aside from Bridger Hunt who's hitting .310 and Robinson who's hitting .271, no one else in the lineup was even hitting .250. The series with Cedar Rapids concludes tomorrow at 4pm.

APRIL 30TH

On Monday, April 30th, I will follow up the usual Minor League Recap with a Month in Review, highlighting the best and worse performances of the first month of the season, along with a Hitter and Pitcher of the Month.

Minor League Recap - 4/22/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-4

Tony Abreu - 2 for 4, 2B, R, K, Picked off
James Loney - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K's
Andy LaRoche - 2 for 3, RBI, BB, K

Eric Stults was solid through 6 innings, but Spike Lundberg (great name) allowed 3 ER in the 8th to take the loss. Tony Abreu returned to the lineup and had a nice game, raising his batting average to .393 while clubbing his 4th double of the season. Loney added a double, his 3rd, and LaRoche is now hitting a respectable .274. Mitch Jones hit his team leading 5th HR and threw out a couple runners from RF. Vegas continues their series with Sacramento tomorrow at 7pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2007_04_22_lvgaaa_srcaaa_1&t=g_box&did=milb

Double A - Jacksonville lost 8-6

Chin Lung Hu - 2 for 5, 2B, RBI, R, K
Xavier Paul - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, RBI, R, K
Cory Dunlap - 2 for 3, BB
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 3, 3B, RBI, R, BB

Chin Lung Hu stayed hot, but the Suns cooled off after their 4 run 3rd inning didnt hold up. Hu is 14 for his last 25 with 6 doubles, at least one two-bagger in each of the last 4 contests. He's batting .354. Paul and Dunlap also had multi-hit efforts. Raglani raised his league leading SLG to .741 and now has 4 Doubles, 4 Triples and 4 HR on the young season. William Juarez had a decent outing, allowing 4 runs over 6 innings, though only 2 of the runs were earned. Matt Riley relieved him and also gave up 4 runs, and only one of his was earned. Jax stays in West Tenn for game 3 of 5 tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire won 11-6

Blake DeWitt - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB
Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 6
Travis Denker - 1 for 6, Solo HR (1)
Lucas May - 2 for 4, 2 RBI, R, PB
Russell Mitchell - 2 for 3, 3B, RBI, R, BB, K
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 1, RBI

Jesus Castillo - 5 IP, 5 Hits, R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K's
Brent Leach - 2 IP, Hit, ER, BB, 4 K's

The 66ers scored a total of 8 runs in the first 4 innings and never looked back. Lucas May continued his hit streak, which is up to 8 games, and is now batting .386. Russell Mitchell also had a pair of hits, and is now just a single point behind May hitting .385. Blake DeWitt seemed to find his groove batting leadoff, hitting his 5th and 6th doubles and raising his average to .250. Travis Denker hit his first dinger of the year and Hoffman collected an RBI single before being replaced as the DH. Jesus Castillo had a nice game, allowing an unearned run over 5 innings. Cory Wade added two scoreless. David Pfeiffer had a forgettable outing, allowing 4 ER without recording an out. Leach relieved him and allowed his first run of the year on a solo homer. Inland Empire concludes their series in Lancaster tomorrow at 6:30pm.

Low A - Great Lakes won 10-1

Trayvon Robinson - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, R, 2 BB, K, SB
Josh Bell - 1 for 5, 2 RBI, R, SB
David Sutherland - 3 for 5, RBI, 2 R, 2 K's
Kenley Jansen - 2 for 5, RBI, 2 R, K

Josh Wall - 7 IP, 3 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's

The Loons had their best offensive game since opening day and Josh Wall had possibly the best outing of his career. After struggling to get through 4 innings in his first 2 starts, Wall took a 1 hitter into the 7th inning and earned his first victory of the season. He has gotten better in each outing this year, and hopefully it's a sign of good things to come. On offense, Trayvon Robinson reached base 4 times and stole his 5th base while collecting his first extra base hit of the season. David Sutherland had 3 hits, Kenley Jansen had 2 and Josh Bell added 1. Preston Mattingly had the day off, but I'm sure he wishes he was out there. The Loons look to add to their 2 game winning streak against Cedar Rapids tomorrow at 4pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/21/07

Triple A - Las Vegas was rained out

Double A - Jacksonville won 5-2

Chin Lung Hu - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, 2 R, K
Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, R, K, OF Assist
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 2, RBI, BB, K
Anthony Raglani - 2 for 3, 3B, RBI, R, BB, E

Justin Orenduff - 3 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 5 BB, K

Hu's the man! Chin Lung Hu is 12 for his last 20 with 5 doubles, including 2 today. His average is up to .350. Raglani extended his on base streak and hit his 3rd triple of the season. He's now batting .294 with a .725 SLG. Paul and Raglani are still struggling. Orenduff got his first start of the year, and while he was wild, you have to love the fact that he didnt allow a hit. He also hasnt allowed an earned run this season. Carlos Alvarez picked up where Justin left off and allowed an ER over 4 innings. He picked up his 3rd win of the season and his ERA raised to 0.79. The petite southpaw gets by with a fringe average fastball and a very good change. Wesley Wright, another small lefty, earned his first save of the year with 2 no-hit innings. He also hasnt allowed a run thus far. The Suns hope to pick up where they left off tomorrow at 1pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_21_jaxaax_wtdaax_1

High A - Inland Empire lost 7-2

Travis Denker - 1 for 4, 2B, R, BB
Ivan De Jesus Jr - 2 for 4, R, BB
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 3, BB, 2 K's
Lucas May - 2 for 4, 2 RBI
Russell Mitchell - 2 for 4
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 4, K, SB, E

Lucas May stayed hot for the 66ers, but Inland Empire could only muster two runs in their loss. May raised his batting average to .379, good for second in the league. Russell Mitchell's BA is up to .367, while Jamie Hoffman is hitting .317 and Denker has a .333 mark in limited time. But the pitching let the game get away early. After the Empire scored their 2 runs in the first, the Jethawks scored a run in each of the first two innings before scoring 2 in the next 2 and another 1 in the 6th. Lancaster hosts IE again tomorrow at 2pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_21_inlafa_lncafa_1

Low A - Great Lakes won 5-4

Trayvon Robinson - 2 for 4, R, K
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 4, K, 3 E's
Josh Bell - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, E
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3, BB
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 3, OF Assist

Miguel Sanfler - 1 IP, Hit, R (0 ER), BB, 2 K's

And the losing streak ends at 8! Somehow, the Loons managed to score 5 runs in the 3rd inning and work around 4 errors to achieve just their 5th win of the year. Trayvon Robinson was the only hitter with a multi-hit effort, getting back to hitting .275. Mattingly collected errors number 6, 7 and 8 while posting a donut hole at the dish. Bell worked 2 walks but also committed his 7th miscue of the season. Scott Van Slyke threw Angels' prospect Hank Conger out at home in the second inning, though he went 0 for 3 and is barely hitting over .200. Carlos Santana is hitting under a buck. Eduardo Perez hit his 2nd homer of the homestand, a 3 run shot that put the Loons ahead for good. Thomas Melgarejo allowed 3 ER in 3.1 innings and was relieved by Francisco Felix, who pitched 4.2 scoreless innings and collected his first win of the season while lowering his ERA to 0.57. Sanfler allowed an unearned run in the 9th for his first save. Great Lakes faces Cedar Rapids again tomorrow at noon.

Minor League Recap - 4/20/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 9-5

James Loney - 2 for 4, R, BB, CS
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 5, 2 K's
Delwyn Young - 2 for 4, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Tony Abreu DNP

Eric Hull - 1 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

An 8 run 4th inning put the 51's ahead for good. Choo Freeman capped it off with a grand slam. Loney raised his average to .266, though he's not going to be stealing many bases. Young also had a couple hits and LaRoche finally got in on the action in the 8th inning. Abreu had the night off. Travis Smith allowed 2 ER over 6 innings. Casey Hoorelbeke struggled, allowing 3 runs while only recording 2 outs. Matt White went 1.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and no runs. Hull closed it out, lowering his ERA to 1.80. Vegas heads to Sacramento for a 4 game road trip, starting tomorrow night at 7pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2007_04_20_cspaaa_lvgaaa_1&t=g_box&did=milb

Double A - Jacksonville won 6-5

Chin Lung Hu - 2 for 5, 2B, R, K
Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, RBI, R, 2 K's
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 3, 2 R, BB, 2 K's
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 3, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K's

Mike Megrew - 5 IP, 7 Hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 8 K's
Jon Meloan - 1.2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

It figures that Megrew would get his first win of the season in his worst outing thus far. His ERA is still just 2.65. Meloan collected his second save of the season, pitching 1.2 perfect innings and increasing his strikeout to walk ratio to 14 to 0. His ERA is 0.96. On offense, Hu has been on fire. He has 9 hits in his last 15 at bats, including 4 doubles, and is now hitting .327. Paul, Dunlap and Raglani all collected hits. Raglani has reached base safely in his last 10 games, and has collected an extra base hit in 8 of the 10. The Suns head to West Tenn for a 5 game series starting tomorrow at 4pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_20_jaxaax_hunaax_1

High A - Inland Empire won 5-3

Travis Denker - 1 for 5, 2 R, SB
Ivan De Jesus Jr - 2 for 5, 2 R, K, SB
Lucas May - 3 for 5, 2B, HR (6), 3 RBI, R
Russell Mitchell - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 K's
Jamie Hoffman- 0 for 4, BB, K
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 5

Yhency Brazoban - 1.2 IP, 2 Hits, ER, BB, K
James McDonald - 5 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's

Another close game for the Empire, as this one went 10 innings before Lucas May collected his third hit, an RBI double, and Drew Locke drew a bases loaded walk to put the 66ers ahead. Ramon Troncoso pitched 2 perfect innings to end the game, walking a pair and striking out a pair. Brazoban made another rehab appearance, and his ability to pitch is far more important than the stats he posts. McDonald was solid if unspectacular in his 5 innings, though his ERA is still just north of 8. Lucas May was once again the star of the game, hitting his league-leading 6th HR to go along with his 4th double. If his defense behind the plate is coming along half as well as his offense, he'll be one hell of a catcher. After taking the first game of the series, IE meets with Lancaster again tomorrow at 5pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_20_inlafa_lncafa_1

Low A - Great Lakes lost 3-0

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Preston Mattingly - 1 for 4, K, E
Josh Bell - 1 for 2, BB
David Sutherland - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 4, 3 K's
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, BB, PB

Another day, another poor showing for the Loons' offense. Mattingly committed his 5th error of the season, leading me to wonder how much longer it'll be before he moves to the OF. Josh Bell is back over the Mendoza line, though the power he showed in the Pioneer League hasnt been evident in Michigan (1 XBH in 12 games). Van Slyke apparently needs another session with his dad, Jansen is back to his old ways and Robinson's average is down to .255. Pitching was alright, as Cody White allowed just 1 ER over 6 innings. His ERA is just under 2. The Looney Toons begins a series with Cedar Rapids tomorrow at 4pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/19/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 9-5

Tony Abreu - 1 for 5, R, 2 K's, 2 E's
James Loney - 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, R, 2 BB
Andy LaRoche - 3 for 5, Solo HR (3), 2 R
Delwyn Young - 1 for 2, RBI, R, 2 BB

Greg Miller - 6 IP, 0 Hits, R (0 ER), 2 BB, 4 K's, 2 Hit Batters

Greg Miller is getting better with each start, and had a no-hitter going in his longest start of the young season. After a rocky start, hitting the first 2 batters of the game, Miller was nearly untouchable. The only run allowed was unearned after Miller walked a batter, allowed a stolen base and Abreu airmailed a throw that scored the man from second. While he walked just 2 batters, he threw 35 balls in 77 pitches. However, he got 9 ground ball outs and was throwing in the low to mid 90s. I just hope Dodgers' brass doesnt get overanxious and promote him before he can handle a heavy workload. On offense, LaRoche had his best game of the year, raising his batting average to .259. Loney's hitting .250 after tonight and, surprisingly, has hit in every game but one this season. Abreu had an off night both at the plate and in the field, but he's reached base in every game this season. Vegas concludes the series with Colorado Springs tomorrow at 7:11pm.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_19_cspaaa_lvgaaa_1

Double A - Jacksonville won 10-4

Chin Lung Hu - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, RBI, R, SB, 2 E's
Cory Dunlap - 2 for 5, 2B, RBI, R
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 3, HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
Xavier Paul DNP

The Suns offense really got going after dropping the first two games of the series. Hu had another strong game, going 7 for his last 10. He's now hitting .320. Dunlap is slowly but surely approaching the Mendoza line, now hitting .188. Raglani hit his league leading 4th HR and even stole a base. He's slugging .667. Xavier Paul got the night off. On the bump, Alvis Ojeda allowed 3 ER in 4 innings and the bullpen kept Jax ahead, with BJ LaMura and Matt Riley tossing 2 scoreless each. Huntsville hosts the Suns tomorrow at 5pm.

High A - Inland Empire won 3-2

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 4, BB, K
Lucas May - 2 for 4, RBI, HBP
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 K's
Russell Mitchell - 2 for 4, 2B, R
Jamie Hoffman - 2 for 4, HR (2), 2 RBI
Travis Denker - 2 for 3, 2B, R, BB

Javy Guerra - 4 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's, Hit Batter, WP, E
Brent Leach - 2 IP, Hit, 0 R, BB, 4 K's, WP

The last 10 IE games have been decided by 3 runs or less. After a rocky beginning, Guerra settled in and kept the 66ers in the game. He allowed 2 runs in the first and ended the second inning by catching a runner trying to steal home. He still has a way to go, but Javy is only 21 and has plenty of time to develop. Jordan Pratt relieved him and went 3 scoreless, followed by two shutout frames from Brent Leach, who maintained his 0 ERA. A Travis Denker sighting was a good sign, as the second baseman collected two hits and a walk in his 2007 debut. May, Hoffman and Mitchell also had multi hit efforts and are all hitting over .345. DeWitt doubled and De Jesus Jr walked, though neither has done much offensively thus far. The 66ers travels to Lancaster for a 4 game set starting tomorrow at 6:30pm.

Low A - Great Lakes played a doubleheader

Game 1 - Great Lakes lost 2-1

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K's
Preston Mattingly - 1 for 4
Josh Bell - 1 for 3
David Sutherland - 0 for 3
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 3, K
Kenley Jansen - 2 for 3, 2B

Clayton Kershaw - 5.2 IP, 4 Hits, ER, 2 BB, 7 K's, E

Another strong outing from Kershaw and another lame offensive showing from the Loons' offense. Eduardo Perez christened their new ballpark with the first HR of its history, though the Loons didnt do much else. Kenley Jansen collected his first two hits of the season, including a double. Trayvon's 0'fer night leaves his batting average at .279 and he's the only regular hitting over .220. Hopefully the bats will heat up as the weather does. Kershaw was strong once again, allowing just the 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks. His G:F was 6:1. He came away with a no-decision.

Game 2 - Great Lakes lost 6-1

Preston Mattingly - 0 for 3, 2 K's, E
Josh Bell - 0 for 1, 2 BB
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3
Scott Van Slyke - 2 for 2, 2B, R

Steven Johnson - 4 IP, 7 Hits, 5 R (3 ER), BB, 6 K's, Balk

2 runs in 2 games? Who do the Loons think they are, the Angels? Scott Van Slyke was working with his dad (Andy) before the games and it seemed to work, with Scott collecting 2 more hits in the back end of the set and scoring the only run of game 2 for Great Lakes. He raised his average to .250. Bell added a couple walks and Bridger Hunt doubled to round out Great Lakes' hitting. Johnson walked just 1 batter and struck out 6, but allowed 3 earned and only last 4 innings. Another disappointing showing from the 19 year old. The Loons end their series with Peoria tomorrow at 4pm.

And Mark Alexander gave up 2 earned in the 9th, raising his ERA to 12.71. At the dish, Matt Kemp went hitless in his first rehab assignment. Xavier Paul - 0 for 4, BB, 2 K's
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 5, RBI
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 4, BB, K

Jon Meloan - .2 IP, 2 Hits, ER, 0 BB, K

Well, it turns out Jon Meloan is human after all. Down by 2 in the 9th, the Suns rallied and tied the game 4-4. Meloan came in for the bottom of the 9th, but allowed 2 singles to start the inning. He then collected a strike out and a ground out. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Meloan uncorked a wild pitch that scored the runner from 3rd and ended the game. It's the first run he's allowed this season. Meloan was preceded by Eric Cyr (5 IP, 2 ER), Carlos Alvarez (2 IP, 0 R) and Wesley Wright (1 IP, 0 R). Chin Lung Hu had a big day, He lifted his average to .289. Not a good day for the rest of the bats, though Marshall McDougall had 3 hits, while Luke Allen and Luis Maza each had a pair. The Suns host Huntsville tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire won 6-5

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 4, R
Lucas May - 2 for 5, K, 2 PB
Russell Mitchell - 3 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 3, BB, K
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 4, R

Ramon Troncoso - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

The 66ers came from behind to pick up the win. Marlon Arias struggled, allowing 5 ER in 4.1 innings. But the bullpen kept them in the game, allowing just 2 hits in 4.2 scoreless innings. Cory Wade picked up his 4th win of the season, allowing a hit and 3 walks while striking out 3. Mario Alvarez allowed a hit in 1 scoreless inning. And Ramon Troncoso picked up his 3rd save with a perfect 9th. Troncoso has struck out 14 batters in 8 innings without allowing a walk. Though he's 24, he may get some consideration for a bullpen spot in the next few seasons. The hitting came through for the Empire tonight, with Russell Mitchell having a good game and Drew Locke hitting his first homer of the season. DeWitt and De Jesus Jr didnt get De hits. Hoffman, May and Mitchell are hitting .333, .340 and .361 respectively. Nice to see some production from the middle of the lineup. IE concludes their series with High Desert tomorrow night at 7pm.

The pen went 4 scoreless, including an appearance from catcher AJ Ellis, who allowed a hit and struck out a batter in the 8th. At the plate, the Suns were held to just 5 hits by Brewers' prospect Manny Parra. Over the past few games, Hu's average has dropped from the .300's to .225. Paul's is down to .227 and Dunlap actually raised his to .184. The lone bright spot has been Raglani, whose seen his average rise to .289 after collecting hits in the past 7 games, including four extra basehits in the past four (2 doubles and 2 HR). Carlos Santana had a forgettable night, going hitless with a couple miscues behind the plate. Minor League Recap - 4/16/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 2-1

Tony Abreu - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
James Loney - 0 for 3, IBB, OF Assist
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 4, HR (1), 2 RBI
Delwyn Young - 0 for 4, 3 K's

A pitcher's duel in the PCL? Eric Stults had a nice outing, allowing just the one run over 7 innings. Eric Hull walked one and struck out one in the 8th, with Tsao striking out 2 in a perfect 9th for the save. Abreu led off the bottom of the first with a single and LaRoche homered 2 outs later, putting the 51's ahead for good. Young struggled, though he's still hitting .300. Loney was walked intentionally, though he hasnt done much this season to deserve that type of treatment. Vegas starts a 4 game homestand with Colorado Springs tomorrow night at 7pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 5-3

Chin Lung Hu - 0 for 6
Xavier Paul - 1 for 6, R, K
Anthony Raglani - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Dunlap - 0 for 1, K

Scott Elbert - 3 IP, 2 Hits, 3 ER, 7 BB, 6 K's
Justin Orenduff - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's
Jon Meloan - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

Elbert really struggled, having trouble finding the strike zone from the very start when he walked the leadoff man on 4 pitches. Previously, he had allowed just 3 walks in 12 innings. Last season, the major knock on him was control. Hopefully this start was an outlier for an otherwise accurate season. Props to the bullpen for pitching 11 scoreless innings. The game went to the 14th tied 3-3, until John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall hit back to back homers to put the Suns ahead 5-3. Jon Meloan came in to close it out and struck out 2, giving him 12 strikeouts (And no walks) in 7 innings this season. Somewhere in there, Justin Orenduff went 2 hitless and Carlos Alvarez went 2 scoreless. Raglani had 2 hits, Paul had 1 and Hu was hitless. Dunlap came in to pinch hit and struck out. Jacksonville faces Huntsville again tomorrow at 5pm.

High A - Inland Empire had the day off

Low A - Great Lakes lost 5-4

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, R, BB, K
Preston Mattingly - 2 for 4, 2B, E
Josh Bell - 0 for 4, 2 K's, E
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 4, RBI
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, BB, K

The Loons made a late run, scoring 2 in the 9th, but came up just short. Mattingly almost doubled his batting average, though he's still hitting .160 and committed his 3rd error of the season. Speaking of errors, Josh Bell is up to 6 miscues and 8 strikeouts, compared to just 4 hits. Both are obviously struggling. Tray collected another single; all of his hits this season have been singles. Kenley Jansen has yet to get a single hit, while Van Slyke is still under the Mendoza line. There are some teams in the Midwest League (The Loons included) that are hitting under .200. Francisco Felix started, though it was Josh Wall's turn in the rotation. Felix allowed 3 runs, one of which was earned, in 4 innings. His ERA is still under 1. Jesus Rodriguez allowed 2 earned in 3, while Garrett White allowed a hit and struck out the side in the 8th. The Loons start a series against the Peoria Chiefs, managed by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, starting tomorrow at 4pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/15/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 8-2

Tony Abreu - 0 for 3, BB
James Loney - 3 for 4, R
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, R
Delwyn Young - 0 for 4, RBI, K, E, OF Assist

Bartolo Colon was too much for most of the 51's lineup. The Angels' starter is concluding his rehab assignment and shut down everyone not named James Loney. J Lo collected two hits against Colon and scored the first run for Vegas in the 9th. His 3 hit performance raised his batting average to .261. LaRoche's double knocked in Loney, though it was his only hit of the game and he's still under the Mendoza line. Young had an off night but is still hitting .333 and threw a runner out at home. Abreu's 0'fer ended his 8 game hitting streak. Pitching was a problem, as starter Travis Smith allowed 5 runs in 5.1 innings. The relievers didnt fare much better, as Mark Alexander and Spike Lundberg allowed 3 runs in just under 3 innings. Matt White pitched a scoreless 9th and is sporting an impressive 1.23 ERA. LV concludes their series with Salt Lake tomorrow at 7pm.

Double A - Jacksonville had the day off

High A - Inland Empire won 1-0

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 5, 2 K's, SB
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 5, 3B, R
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 4, BB, 3 K's
Lucas May - 1 for 5, RBI, 2 K's
Jamie Hoffman - 0 for 4, K

A pitching duel in the Cally league? It's twue. The game went into the 12th inning before Blake DeWitt tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a play at the plate. Mitchell and Hoffman went hitless, while DeWitt, May and De Jesus all collected one a piece. On the pitching side, 24 year old Miguel Pinango pitching a gem, allowing just 3 hits over 6 scoreless innings and striking out 9. Brent Leach pitched 3 scoreless innings of his own, followed by 2 shutout frames from Jacobo Meque and 1 from David Pfeiffer who picked up the win. The 66ers have Monday off before starting a 3 game set with High Desert Tuesday at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 3-1

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, 2 K's, SB, E, OF Assist
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 4, 3 K's
Josh Bell - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI
Carlos Santana - 0 for 4, 2 K's
David Sutherland - 1 for 4, 2 K's
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 4

The offense let the Loons down again. Thomas Melgarejo got the start and pitched well, allowing just 1 run in 5 innings. Doug Brooks and Miguel Ramirez allowed 2 more runs in their combined 3 innings of work. At the plate, Tray is really the only hitter who's had a good start to the season. Although he only had one hit, he's still batting .312. He also stole his 4th base of the year. Mattingly's batting average has dropped below .100 and he's struck out 11 times in 21 at bats. He has just 2 hits and no walks. Definitely struggling but he has plenty of time to turn it around. Josh Bell had a nice game with 2 hits and he didnt commit an error! Van Slyke and Sutherland collected hits as well. Santana is also struggling, hitting just .125. Josh Wall hits the mound in the series finale, tomorrow at 3pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/14/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 9-6

Tony Abreu - 2 for 4, 3B, R, BB, K, E
James Loney - 2 for 5, R
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, BB
Delwyn Young - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, BB, K

Greg Miller - 4 IP, 3 Hits, 3 R (1 ER), BB, 7 K's
Chin Hui Tsao - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

Greg Miller improved on his season debut in the 51's win. Miller was flat out dominant for his first 3 innings, blowing gas in the mid 90s. But Miller seemed to tire in the 4th. After Brandon Wood reached on Abreu's error, Gorneault singled and Evans tripled them in. Evans then scored on a sac fly, tying the game. Miller seems to be on a strict pitch count, as he's made just 67 and 70 pitches in his 2 starts this year. However, he was much more aggressive this game, getting ahead of hitters early. Hopefully his control will continue to improve and he'll increase his stamina. At the plate, every LV hitter collected at least 1 base hit. Tony Abreu increased his batting average to .472. Second baseman Sergio Garcia was a triple away from the cycle. Garcia, Tomas Perez, Mitch Jones and Kelly Stinnett all homered. LaRoche and Young doubled. Vegas is riding a 6 game hitting streak and look to stay hot as they again face Salt Lake tomorrow at noon.

Double A - Jacksonville won 2-1

Chin Lung Hu - 0 for 3, K
Xavier Paul - 1 for 3, K
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 3
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 2, Solo HR (3), BB

Mike Megrew - 5 IP, 4 Hits, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's
Jon Meloan - 2 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

Mike Megrew dealt another gem in a pitcher's duel that concluded in the Suns' favor. Megrew scattered 4 hits and 2 walks over 5 scoreless innings, maintaining his 0.00 ERA for the season. Jon Meloan came in for another 2 inning stint, and with the Dodgers scoring a pair in the 8th, earned the win. Meloan has yet to allow a walk or extra base hit this season, and has 10 strikeouts in 6 innings. He's going to make it hard for Dodgers' brass to keep him in the minors much longer. At the plate, Paul collected another hit, upping his season average to .257. Hu's 0 for 3 performance didnt hurt much as he's still hitting .300, though Dunlap's hitless night lowered his average to .182. Raglani's 8th inning blast tied the game, and second baseman's Luis Maza's first shtonk of the year put Jacksonville ahead for good. The Suns are off tomorrow and will face Huntsville starting Monday at 4pm.

May hit his 4th and 5th Homeruns of the season, raising his batting average to .350 and his SLG to .900. Jamie Hoffman's 2 for 4 showing lifted his average to .378. Blake DeWitt and Ivan De Jesus Jr entered the game as late inning replacements. James McDonald started the game but lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing 5 ER on 8 hits and 2 walks. Jordan Pratt came in for 4.1 innings of one hit ball, though he did issue 4 walks. Jacobo Meque (Great name) came in for the 8th inning, allowed 4 baserunners and 3 runs without recording an out and was relieved by Ramon Troncoso. Troncoso, who allowed just 2 hits in 2 innings of work, picked the save. The 66ers conclude their series with Lancaster tomorrow at 2pm.

David Sutherland - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, BB, K

Cody White - 4 IP, Hit, ER, 5 BB, 9 K's

The Loons were shut out for the second time this season as the Lansing Lugnuts had 4 pitchers combine for a 5 hit shutout. Preston Mattingly and Josh Bell had the night off. Trayvon Robinson is still hitting .321. On the hill, Cody White allowed just on hit and struck out 9 but he was very wild, issuing 5 walks. He now has 8 free passes in just under 8 innings this season. The Loons look to get back on track tomorrow at 11am.

Andy LaRoche - 0 for 4
Delwyn Young - 1 for 4

Eric Hull - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

A well pitched game from Joe Mays propelled the 51's to their 5th straight win. Mays went 7 innings, allowing just a Solo HR along with 3 singles and 2 walks. Hull was hitless in his 2 inning stint and has lowered his season ERA to 2.25. At the plate, James Loney had a two out bases-clearing triple, which put the 51's ahead for good. Abreu drew his second walk of the season, while Young extended his hitting streak to 6 games. LaRoche is struggling, batting just .172 so far on the young season. Greg Miller makes his second start of the season tomorrow at 7pm.

BJ LaMura came in for the 5th and lasted until the 7th inning, when he was relieved by Wesley Wright with 1 out in the inning. LaMura allowed a run, while Wright maintained his scoreless season. On offense, Hu's back and collected a single that preceded his first stolen base of the year. Raglani homered and drew a walk. Dunlap's 1 for 4 performance raised his BA to .200. Paul's 0 for 4 lowered his to .250. Another big lefty takes the mound tomorrow as Mike Megrew gets the start at 4pm

High A - Inland Empire lost 7-5

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 1 for 5, RBI, 2 K's
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 5
Lucas May - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 2, R, BB, K, HBP
Jamie Hoffman - 0 for 3, BB, K

Javy Guerra - 3 IP, 6 Hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's

The 66ers scored 5 runs in the second inning but Lancaster responded scoring in each inning from the 3rd to the 7th and ended up with the loss. Javy Guerra got the start and was very wild. He loaded the bases in each of his 3 innings, but only gave up one run on a solo homer. He'll take some time to get back to his old self. May, Mitchell and Hoffman all went hitless but managed to reach base via the walk (And HBP in Mitchell's case). De Jesus went 1 for 5 but is still hitting .333. DeWitt also collected a hit. IE stays at home for another tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 6-2

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, R, 2 K's
Preston Mattingly - 1 for 4, 3 K's
Josh Bell - 0 for 4, RBI, K, 2 E's
Carlos Santana - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 3, 3 K's

Steven Johnson - 2 IP, 6 Hits, 5 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 3 K's
Miguel Sanfler - 2 IP, Hit, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's

The Loons fell behind early and never recovered. Johnson gave up 3 runs in the second inning and allowed 3 baserunners in the 3rd without recording an out before leaving the game. His ERA skyrocketted to 7.50. The bullpen was great though, allowing just 1 unearned run over 7 innings. Robinson and Francisco Lizarraga accounted for the only two runs which were scored in the 6th inning. Most of the Loons' hitters are struggling, with Bell not only hitting under a buck but committed his 4th and 5th errors of the season. I guess the good news is they can only get better. Great Lakes takes on Lansing tomorrow at 4pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/12/07

Triple A - Las Vegas was rained out

Double A - Jacksonville lost 3-1

Xavier Paul - 2 for 4
Cory Dunlap - 2 for 4
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, R, K

Carlos Alvarez - 2.1 IP, Hit, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

The Suns' offense was shut down today, with Chin Lung Hu missing another game. The good news: Xavier Paul and Cory Dunlap both picked up two hits. Raglani singled and scored. 28 year old Eric Cyr allowed 2 unearned runs in 4.2 innings, though he committed the throwing error that led to those runs. Carlos Alvarez notched 2.1 more shutout innings. Matt Riley gave up an earned run without allowing a hit, which is unique. Jax and the Sox face off tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire won 4-3

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 3, R, BB
Lucas May - 1 for 4, R
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 4, SB
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 4, R, 2 E's
Russell Mitchell - 3 for 4, 2 2B's, 2 RBI, R, K

Marlon Arias - 4.1 IP, 5 Hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K's
Cory Wade - 3.2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's

Another relatively low scoring game for the 66ers. De Jesus went hitless for the first time this season but still managed a walk. May, Hoffman and DeWitt collected a hit a piece, though DeWitt committed 2 errors giving him 4 on the season. Russell Mitchell upped his average to a team leading .471, producing his third multi-hit effort in 4 games. Arias was solid if unspectacular in his second start. Cory Wade picked up his 3rd win in relief. Ramon Troncoso allowed an unearned run to finish the game while striking out the side. Inland Empire opposes Lancaster again tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes played a Double Header

Game 1 - Great Lakes lost 9-3

Preston Mattingly - 1 for 2, 3B, 3 RBI, E
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3
David Sutherland - 0 for 3, K
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 2

Josh Wall - 3.2 IP, 7 Hits, 4 ER, 2 BB, K

Wall struggled in his 2007 debut and really hasnt regained the stuff he had as a prep. Mattingly drove in all 3 runs for the Loons. Santana, Sutherland and Van Slyke went hitless. Bridger Hunt went 1 for 3 with a double and scored two runs.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_12_swmafx_ftwafx_1

Game 2 - Great Lakes won 5-2

Trayvon Robinson - 2 for 4, R, 2 SB
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 3, 2 K's
Josh Bell - 0 for 2, R, BB, K
David Sutherland - 3 for 3

Clayton Kershaw - 5 IP, Hit, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's, 2 Pickoffs

Kershaw was back to his dominant self in part two of today's doubleheader. He last 5 innings, allowed 4 baserunners and even picked two of them off first base. The walks are still a little high but hopefully his command will improve as the weather does. Good games offensively for Robinson, Sutherland and Francisco Lizarraga, who is hitting .500 on the season. Steven Johnson takes the hill for the Loons tomorrow at 4pm

Minor League Recap - 4/11/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 7-4

Tony Abreu - 3 for 4, 2 2B's, 3 R, BB
James Loney - 1 for 4, 3 RBI, K
Andy LaRoche DNP

DJ Houlton - 5 IP, 5 Hits, 3 ER, BB, 3 K's

The 51's are on a hot streak, winning their last four games. Also on a streak was Tony Abreu, who collected a hit in 8 consecutive at bats. Loney collected only 1 hit but drove in 3 runs in 3 different plate appearances. DJ Houlton was decent, while Matt White and Tim Hamulack combined for 4 innings while only allowing 1 run. The series concludes tomorrow at 10:30am.

Double A - Suns won 7-0

Xavier Paul - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, 2 RBI
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 4, RBI, BB, 2 K's
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI, R, BB, K
Chin Lung Hu DNP

William Juarez - 7 IP, 5 Hits, 0 R, BB, 6 K's
Justin Orenduff - 2 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

Different day, same story. William Juarez was just as good in his second start as he was in his first, scattering 5 hits and a walk over 7 shutout innings, maintaining his 0.00 ERA. Juarez, who was acquired in the Shawn Green trade, worked mainly out of relief last season. Justin Orenduff finished the game with two more scoreless innings of his own. At the plate, Xavier Paul had a strong game hitting 2nd. Cory Dunlap drew yet another walk and Anthony Raglani doubled. Chin Lung Hu is still feeling the effects from the injury he sustained sliding into home yesterday. The Suns and the Diamond Jaxx go again tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 2-1

Rafael Furcal - 1 for 2, BB, K, SB
Ivan DeJesus Jr - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K's
Blake DeWitt - 2 for 4, 2B
Lucas May - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Jamie Hoffman - 0 for 0, RBI, SF

Jesus Castillo - 6 IP, 5 Hits, ER, 0 BB, 6 K's

For the second straight game, the 66ers faced a rehabbing major leaguer. Jered Weaver shut down the Inland Empire for 7 innings. Right-hander Jesus Castillo pitched a fine game of his own, much better than his debut. At the plate, Rafael Furcal got on base a few times and stole a base, leading me to believe his ankle is healthy and he should be back in the bigs before long. Blake DeWitt had a nice game, though both May and DeJesus went hitless. The 66ers will finally face a minor league pitcher tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes was rained out

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Minor League Recap - 4/10/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 10-2

Tony Abreu - 5 for 5, Solo HR (1), 3 R
James Loney - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI, R
Andy LaRoche - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, 2 K's
Delwyn Young - 1 for 5, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, 2 K's

Mark Alexander - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, BB, 2 K's
Eric Hull - 2 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, BB, K

Abreu's 5 for 5 effort headlined the 51's 10-2 victory. Abreu added his first HR of the year, raising his batting average to .440. A HR by Young and a double for Loney contributed to the offensive outburst. LaRoche went hitless but did walk twice. Eric Stults provided 5 scoreless innings, with Alexander and Tim Hamulack adding a shutout frame each. Vegas is in Colorado Springs again tomorrow for a 5pm contest.

Double A - Jacksonville lost 3-1

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 3
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 4, 2B, K
Xavier Paul - 1 for 3, BB, K
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, Solo HR (1), K

Scott Elbert - 5 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K's

Scott Elbert's 5 no-hit innings were all for not as the Suns' offense couldnt get it going. Chin Lung Hu was thrown out at the plate after trying to score on Dunlap's double and had to leave the game with an injury. Paul was back to hitting 6th and did alright. Brian Akin relieved Elbert in the 6th inning and blew the 1-0 lead that came on Raglani's first longball of the year. The Suns hope to get their offense kickstarted tomorrow morning at 10am.

High A - Inland Empire lost 4-2

Rafael Furcal - 0 for 4, BB
Ivan DeJesus Jr - 3 for 4, 2B, R
Blake DeWitt - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, R
Lucas May - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Jamie Hoffman - 0 for 4

Brent Leach - 1.1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

Rafael Furcal began his rehab assignment as the 66ers' DH but another rehabbing major leaguer, Bartolo Colon, got the win 4-2. Shortstop Ivan DeJesus Jr did his best to impress Furcal, collecting 3 hits, including his 4th double of the season. DeWitt had a multi-hit effort, though May and Hoffman went hitless. Alberto Bastardo got the start and surrendered 3 ER in just 2.1 innings of work before being replaced by Jordan Pratt, who allowed a run over 4.1 innings while striking out 7. Furcal has at least one more game with the Empire tomorrow at 7pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_04_10_inlafa_rcqafa_1

Low A - Great Lakes won 3-2

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, BB, K
Josh Bell - 0 for 3, R, BB, E
Carlos Santana - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 3, BB

Thomas Melgarejo - 4 IP, 4 Hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's

A pitcher's duel resulted in a Loons win. Melgarejo, just 20, was solid in his debut. Preston Mattingly played the role of Wally Pipp as Francisco Lizarraga went 4 for 5 with 2 SB's in his place. Bell committed his third error of the season, and while listening to radio broadcasts, he doenst sound like the most reliable defensive third baseman. Santana doubled in a couple runs. Clayton Kershaw makes his second start of the season tomorrow at 3pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/9/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 14-5

James Loney - 1 for 5, RBI, R
Andy LaRoche - 2 for 5, Solo HR (1), 2 R, BB
Delwyn Young - 2 for 3, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB

Delwyn Young stayed hot as the 51's exploded for 14 runs. Travis Smith provided 5 innings of 2 run ball. Reliever Matt White pitched his third scoreless inning this season, so I guess he could always fall back on Baseball if that selling rock for billions thing doesnt work out. The Roche hit his first Homerun of the year, and hopefully many more will follow. Loney is still struggling, and while he's hit safely in 4 of 5, he only has 4 hits. Young's average is up to .474, though I think a strong performance out of the gate would do more to raise his trade value than help his chances of making the Dodgers. Las Vegas goes again tomorrow at 5pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2007_04_09_lvgaaa_cspaaa_1&t=g_box&did=milb

Double A - Jacksonville won 1-0

Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, RBI, BB, 3 K's
Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 4, K
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K's
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 3, K

Mike Megrew - 7 IP, 3 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's
Jon Meloan - 2 IP, Hit, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's

Megrew was perfect through 4 and Meloan was dominant in relief. But the Suns didnt put the game away until the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. Xavier "X Man" Paul delivered a game-winning single, scoring AJ Ellis and there was much rejoicing. It was Paul's first game as a leadoff hitter, and I'm hoping he sees a lot more time in that role given his past success at the top of the lineup. Hu has hit in each game this season. Dunlap is 2 for 14 so far, though he's drawn 3 walks. Megrew was most impressive in his first start of the year. He wasnt healthy for most of last season, so the fact that he comes out of the gate dominant is a testament to his off-season conditioning. He has the potential to be a middle of the order starter. The Suns start a series with West Tenn tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 4-1

Ivan DeJesus Jr - 1 for 4, 2B, S
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4
Lucas May - 2 for 4
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 4

James McDonald - 4.2 IP, 5 Hits, 4 ER, BB, 8 K's, Error

After a 4 game series in which 88 total runs were scored, the 66ers were held to just a single run. Lucas May collected his fourth straight multi=hit game and maintained his .500 batting average. DeJesus collected his 3rd double of the season. Hoffman has hit safely in all 5 games this season. DeWitt had an off night. On the hill, James McDonald made his High A debut. While the earned runs are high, the 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio is great. McDonald played in the OF early in his pro career, but has since become a full time pitcher. He has a projectible frame and a lot of potential. The Empire strikes back tomorrow night at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 1-0

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, K
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 4, 2 K's, E
Josh Bell - 0 for 3, K, E
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3, E

Miguel Sanfler - 2.1 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's

The Fort Wayne Wizards took a perfect game into the bottom of the 9th, but Scott Van Slyke and Justin Fuller hit back to back singles and ruined the Wizards' chance at history. As you saw, all of the Loons' hitters were shut down. Great Lakes pitching kept them in the game. Cody White allowed a run on 4 hits (including a solo HR) in 3.2 innings. Sanfler, Miguel Ramirez and Garrett White went 4.1 scoreless. Hopefully, Mattingly, Bell and the rest can get things going tomorrow at 6pm.

Minor League Recap - 4/8/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 9-4

Tony Abreu - 2 for 5, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 R, K
James Loney - 1 for 6, K
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 3, RBI, R, K
Delwyn Young - 2 for 4, Solo HR (3), 2 R, HBP

Greg Miller - 3 IP, 1 Hit, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K's
Mark Alexander - .1 IP, Hit, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K's
Chin Hui Tsao - 1.2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

It's Miller time! For the first time since 2003, Greg Miller started a professional baseball game. And while the results were mixed, simply seeing him on the mound was very encouraging. The one hit he allowed was a broken-bat, bloop single, so hitters were having lots of problems making solid contact against him. He'll need time to get his command to get back where it was, but he still has the potential to be a dominant starter. On offense, Delwyn Young stayed hot, and Larry Bigbie had an impressive 4 for 5 showing. Loney still isnt hitting but expect him to heat up soon. Tony Abreu has hit in all 4 games this series, and LaRoche put up a decent line. The 51's start another 4 game road trip tomorrow at 5pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&gid=2007_04_08_lvgaaa_slcaaa_1&did=t400&sid=t400

Double A - Jacksonville won 8-2

Chin Lung Hu - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, 2 RBI, R
Cory Dunlap - 0 for 4, R, BB
Xavier Paul - 0 for 2
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, 2B, R

Carlos Alvarez - 1 IP, Hit, 0 R, BB, 3 K's

It looked like the Suns would get completely shut down, as Smokies' pitcher Kevin Hart was working on a perfect game through 5 innings. But in the 6th, the Suns busted out with 8 unanswered runs. Chin Lung Hu has gotten off to a good start after struggling with the bat last season. Dunlap and Paul havent hit much in Double A, though they have a ways to go before landing in Slumpville. Alvis Ojeda worked 5 innings, allowing 2 solo homeruns. Lefty relievers Alvarez, Wesley Wright and Matt Riley held Tennessee scoreless for 4 innings. The Suns go for the series win tomorrow at 8am.

High A - Inland Empire won 15-11

Ivan DeJesus Jr - 3 for 6, RBI, 3 R, BB, K, E
Blake DeWitt - 3 for 6, HR (2), 3 RBI, 4 R, BB, E
Lucas May - 3 for 6, 2B, 3B, HR (3), 3 RBI, 3 R, K, HBP
Jamie Hoffman - 3 for 5, 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R, BB, K

Javy Guerra - 3.1 IP, 5 Hits, 8 R (4 ER), 5 BB, 0 K's

Another big offensive game, this time the end result was in the 66ers' favor. Right-hander Javy Guerra returned from injury and, like Greg Miller, struggled with command. Still just 21, Guerra has plenty of time to return to his pre-injury form, when he featured a fastball that he could dial up to the mid 90s. It's great to see 4 guys with 3 hits, while Tony Harper and Gabe Gutierrez had 2 hits a piece. Lucas May was a single short of hitting for the cycle. While I cant speak for his defense, the recently converted catcher has rocketted out of the gates by hitting .500 with 3 doubles and 3 homeruns in the first 4 games of the season. As a matter of fact, he has 3 hits in each of his last 3 games. Jamie Hoffman is hitting .556, while DeJesus is hitting just .400. The 66ers start a 3 game set with Rancho Cucamonga tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes had the day off

A great start to both the minor and major league seasons. A minor league sweep compliments the Dodgers sweeping the Giants in San Fran. Hope everyone had a good Easter.

Saturday, April 07, 2007

Minor League Recap - 4/7/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 7-3

Tony Abreu - 1 for 4, R, 2 K's, E
James Loney - 1 for 4, RBI, OF Assist
Andy LaRoche - 0 for 4, K, OF Assist
Delwyn Young - 2 for 4, R, SB

The 51's are still winless on the young season. Veteran Joe Mays worked 5 innings, allowing 5 runs though only 2 were earned. Shortstop Tomas Perez committed two errors and catcher Kelly Stinnett had two passed balls. At the plate, Andy LaRoche has struggled mightily, being held hitless for the second time in the series. Abreu played 3rd today and committed an error, though he doesnt have much experience at the position. Loney made a great, diving catch to save a run early in the contest. The bright spot offensively thus far has been Delwyn Young, who already has 5 hits in 3 games. On the mound, Casey Hoorelbeke relieved Mays but was ineffective, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings of work. Matt White pitched a scoreless eighth. The 51's look to salvage the series by earning their first win tomorrow at 1:00pm.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2007_04_07_lvgaaa_slcaaa_1&t=g_box&did=milb

Double A - Jacksonville lost 10-6

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 4, BB, K, E
Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, R, BB, K
Cory Dunlap - DNP

Wesley Wright - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, K

The Suns struck early, scoring 4 runs in the first and adding another couple in the third, looking for their second win of the season. Veteran Eric Cyr kept them in the game, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in 5 innings. But reliever BJ Lamura gave up another 5 in 3 innings and the Suns couldnt recover. Hu committed his first error of the season, trying to recover from a down year defensively. Paul hit third in the lineup, with Dunlap getting the day off. Lefty Wesley Wright pitched a perfect inning in relief; he could be a LOOGY in the future. The Suns try to even up the series tomorrow at noon.

High A - Inland Empire won 11-6

Ivan DeJesus Jr - 1 for 5, 3B, R, K, E
Blake DeWitt - 1 for 5, Solo HR (1), E
Lucas May - 3 for 3, 2B, Solo HR (2), 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 CS
Russell Mitchell - 2 for 5, 2 R
Jamie Hoffman - 1 for 3, RBI, 2 R, BB, S

Brent Leach - 2 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, BB, K

A nice rebound from last night's debacle. Marlon Arias didnt last long, going only 3.2 IP, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks. Cory Wade relieved him and provided the 66ers with 2.1 scoreless innings. Lefty Jacobo Meque allowed 3 unearned runs on no hits and 2 walks. Leach finished off the game with 2 scoreless. At the plate, every starter had at least one hit. May was the POTG, collecting his second double and second HR of the season. He and DeWitt combined for back to back homeruns in the 9th. DeJesus committed his 2nd error in 3 games, but he's a smooth defender that should refine his glovework with age. Outfielder Andrew Locke added a 3 for 4 performance, while second baseman Elian Herrera went 2 for 3. The series concludes tomorrow at noon.

Low A - Did Not Play (Inclement weather)

Happy Easter everyone!

Minor League Recap - 4/6/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-5

Tony Abreu - 2 for 6, K
James Loney - 0 for 5, R, BB, K
Andy LaRoche - 2 for 6, 2 R, E
Delwyn Young - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, RBI, R, BB, K

DJ Houlton - 4.2 IP, 3 Hits, 2 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K's
Mark Alexander - 2 IP, 3 Hits, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 2 K's

Different game, same story. For the second time in as many nights, the 51's allowed a walk-off hit, this time to Angel's prospect Brandon Wood in the bottom of the 12th. Houlton was decent in his debut, though not getting through the 5th is unimpressive. Reliever Eric Hull and billionaire Matt White shut Salt Lake down for just over 3 innings. At the plate, Abreu and LaRoche picked up a couple hits each. Delwyn Young had a nice game. Loney struggled. The 51's led 5-3 heading into the 9th and Alexander came in for the save. After hitting the leadoff batter and allowing a double to put runners at second and third, Mark retired the next two batters and the game seemed to be in hand. But back to back RBI singles tied the game and the teams headed to extra innings. Another inning by Alexander was followed by an inning from Luis Gonzalez, but with one out in the 12th, Wood put the game away with a shot over the LF wall. The 51's look for their first win of the season tomorrow at 1:00pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 5=0

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 3, BB, CS
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 4
Xavier Paul - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, K
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 K's

Jon Meloan - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's

Strong pitching won the game for the Suns today, starting with a brilliant outing from William Juarez. Juarez scattered 7 hits and 2 walks over 7 shutout innings of work, adding 2 strikeouts. That performance was followed by 2 dominant frames from Jon Meloan. 5 batters that faced Meloan went down swinging, the 6th (and last of the game) grounded out to Chin Lung Hu. Hu singled and added a walk, but was cut down trying to steal second. Dunlap and Raglani had hits, Raglani's was a 2 run Triple. Xavier Paul went hitless, but walked twice. The series continues tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 18-11

Ivan DeJesus Jr - 2 for 4, 2 R, RBI, BB, E
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, R, BB, K
Lucas May - 3 for 5, 2B, HR (1), 4 RBI, 3 R
Russell Mitchell - 3 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
Jamie Hoffman - 2 for 5, 2B, R, 2 RBI

Jesus Castillo - 2 IP, 5 Hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's
Mario Alvarez - 1 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, K

Well, the California League has always been known to favor hitters, and the 66ers' pitching staff did everything they could to hold up that tradition. Between the two teams, 29 Runs were scored on 31 hits. Ivan DeJesus Jr collected two more hits on the year, along with a walk. Blake DeWitt's bat is still cold. Lucas May and Russell Mitchell each went 3 for 5 with a HR; two different prospects really, with May moving behind the plate which gives him great versatility on defense and Mitchell being relegated to first base. Hoffman already has 6 hits on the young season, 3 of which have gone for extra bases (2 doubles and a HR). Every IE pitcher gave up at least a run, with Ramon Troncoso being the least worst after surrending one score on 2 hits while striking out the side in his inning of work. This is one day the pitching staff as a whole would like to forget. The 66ers go again tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes won 3-1

Trayvon Robinson - 3 for 4, 2 R, RBI, SB, S

Another win for the Loons, Steven Johnson put together a strong outing in his 2007 debut. The crafty righty (Well, he is...) allowed only one run on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3 in 4 innings. Michael Gardner and Jesus Rodriguez combined for 5 shutout innings in relief. At the plate, Trayvon Robinson stayed hot as he collected 3 more hits and his first stolen base of the year. Josh Bell, Carlos Santana and Kenley Jansen were held hitless, though Scott Van Slyke (Yes, he's the son of Andy) doubled in his first start of the season. Preston Mattingly was given the night off. The Loons look for the sweep tomorrow at 3:30pm.
