Weekly Review

Triple A - Las Vegas

Who's Hot - SS Chin Lung Hu was 10 for 31 (.323) with his 14th HR of the season. He also hit his 40th double and stole his 15th base. RHP Jon Meloan worked 3 hitless innings this week and it's really a mystery as to why he's not on the Dodgers by now. Hopefully Colletti will come to his senses and promote the kid once rosters expand.

Who's Not - OF Delwyn Young went just 6 for 28 (.214), though he collected 3 doubles and a HR. Still, he leads the organization and the PCL with 48 doubles.

Who to Watch - With just one more week left in the minor league season, 3B Andy LaRoche and IF Tony Abreu are prime candidates for a September callup -- or at least they would be if they were completely healthy. LaRoche finally returned to the lineup yesterday, but did not start today. Abreu is continuing to experience problems with a soft tissue injury on his midsection. With Shea Hillenbrand struggling and Jeff Kent possibly missing some time after being beaned, the Dodgers could use both of them.

Double A - Jacksonville

Who's Hot - LHP Clayton Kershaw finally found control of his curveball and thoroughly dominated this week, giving up just 1 earned run on 4 hits in 13 innings. He also struck out 18 batters. RHP James McDonald allowed 3 earned in his 11 innings this week, striking out 11 and walking just 3. RHP Justin Orenduff had one of his best outings of the year on Wednesday, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 12. 3B Blake DeWitt went 10 for 27 (.370) with 2 homers and his 40th double of the year.

Who's Not - 1B/DH Cory Dunlap had a single in 12 (.083) at bats this week and it's been all but a lost year for him. Outside of a good month of May, C Diddy has done nothing to prove himself as a prospect. OF Xavier Paul did go 3 for 10 with a double, but cant manage to keep himself in the lineup. He's put up good numbers as a 22 year old in a pitcher's league, but he'll need to stay healthy to establish himself as the Dodgers' best OF prospect.

Who to Watch - RHP Zach Hammes spent most of the year in the rotation, but has made his last 3 appearances as a reliever. He bursted back on to the prospect scene while playing winter ball in Hawaii (Lucky bastard) and bumping 97mph when coming out of the pen. I thought it was odd that he spent so much time starting this season, but it appears as though the Dodgers are preparing him for a callup to their pen.

High A - Inland Empire

Who's Hot - OF Jamie Hoffman was 9 for 23 (.391) with a double and a pair of HR. Hoffman's quietly put up a very consistent season, hitting .300 every month except July when he hit .295. The former hockey player and non-drafted free agent turned 23 on Monday and profiles as a 4th outfielder at the next level. SS Ivan De Jesus Jr was 9 for 18 (.500), including a 5 hit game on Wednesday and upped his doubles total to 22. He also committed his 30th error. So while De Jesus Jr is lauded for his natural shortstop actions, he will have to clean up his overall defensive play going forward. C Lucas May went 6 for 19 (.316) and hit his league/organization best 25th HR.

Who's Not - RHP Javy Guerra had his worst outing of the year, allowing 8 earned runs in just 2.2 innings. Guerra's had problems with his control all year and leads the California league in walks with 75. One bright spot is that he ranks 8th with 119 strikeouts. 3B Josh Bell was 3 for 18 (.167) with a double and a HR. He's really struggled since his promotion, with just 4 extra base hits in 16 games.. 2B Travis Denker went 3 for 15 (.200) with a double and a HR, but even worse, he was traded to the Giants to complete the Mark Sweeney deal. Good luck in San Fran, Travis.

Who to Watch - RHP Mario Alvarez, who I believe has a fastball that touches the mid 90s, had a great start on Wednesday. He went 6 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 1 hit and a pair of walks while striking out 10. He's been wildly inconsistent this year, but arms like his are always a valuable commodity.

Low A - Great Lakes

Who's Hot - 3B Brian Mathews has sizzled since his promotion, going 10 for 30 (.333) with a couple doubles and 6 walks this week. And he turned 20 today! Happy Birthday Brian! OF Trayvon Robinson was 8 for 21 (.381) with a double, a triple and his 2nd HR of the season. However, the speed demon has swiped just 1 bag in his last 10 games.

Who's Not - RHP Josh Wall had 2 short outings this week, lasting just 5 innings and allowing 3 ER. One positive note is his post All Star break ERA: 3.39. 2B Preston Mattingly collected 4 hits in 25 at bats (.160) this week. That included a 3 hit game tonight and he had been 1 for his last 24. It appears that Preston should have spent this season in Ogden.

Who to Watch - 2B/SS Juan Rivera, the Dodgers' top international prospect a few years ago, has had an up and down season. The switch-hitting 20 year old his .333/.412./.533 before the All Star break, though has since hit just .234/.274/.355. His age and position flexibility still gives him some value, but like most young players, he needs to be consistent.

Rookie Ball - Ogden

Who's Hot - SS Jaime Pedroza was 9 for 23 (.391) with a double and 3 HR. The younger brother of former Dodger prospect Sergio, Jaime has always been able to hit. The question is how much of an effect has the Pioneer League had on his numbers? LHP Wilfredo Diaz went 5 innings and allowed only 1 earned run in his outing on Wednesday. Diaz has posted decent peripherals (44 K's, 16 Walks and 3 HR in 45 innings) to go along with his mediocre 4.80 ERA. The 20 year old is one of a few bright spots in the Raptors' pitching staff. 3B Austin Gallagher managed a 6 for 21 (.286) week, hitting his 9th double.

Who's Not - 1B Jaime Ortiz has been ice cold this month, and was just 2 for 19 (.105) this week. Still, he's hitting a respectable .273 with a .492 SLG. OF Jovanny Rosario is riding a 9 game hitting streak, though he's had single hits in each of his 6 games this week (.250).

Who to Watch - C Alex Garabedian had a down week but has been hitting cleanup and batting .304 in August. After being drafted in the 8th round, Garabedian could be the best catching prospect in the Dodgers' system. I expect him to be fast-tracked and start next year in High A.

Rookie Ball - GCL Dodgers

Who's Hot - OF Alfredo Silverio was 11 for 21 (.524), raising his league best average to .378. My main concern with Silverio, aside from a low walk rate (11 in 50 games), is his age. He's already 20, so what's he doing in the Gulf Coast League? I hope he can fly through the system and start next season at High A. 1B/OF Andrew Lambo went 6 for 16 (.375) with a double and 3 walks this week. He reminds me of Andre Ethier.

Who's Not - 1B Kyle Orr was 2 for 19 (.105), though one of the two was his 3rd HR of the year.

Who to Watch - RHP Chris Withrow has pitched just 1 inning since August 1st. His last outing was a perfect frame on Tuesday. I have no information on a possible injury, so hopefully the Dodgers are just being conservative with his workload.

Game 2 - DSL Dodgers were rained out

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Weekly Review

Triple A - Las Vegas

Who's Hot - 2B/SS Tony Abreu returned from injury and went 6 for 19 with 3 doubles and a pair of walks. OF Delwyn Young was 7 for 20 and clubbed his league-leading 45th double.

Who's Not - 2B/SS Chin Lung Hu, who's been seeing more time at 2B recently, went 7 for 30; however, 3 of the 7 hits were HR, giving him a career high 13 on the year. RHP Jon Meloan allowed 2 earned runs and 4 walks in 4.1 innings.

Who to Watch - 3B Andy LaRoche suffered a back injury in a game on August 3rd and has recorded just 2 at bats since then. The club said an MRI showed no serious damage and he's expected to return shortly. He has just 1 hit in 11 August at bats, his 16th HR of the season.

Double A - Jacksonville

Who's Hot - RHP James McDonald recorded his 6th win in 7 Double A starts by going 6 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 9. LHP Greg Miller, who's been struggling with his control most of the season, went 6 innings without issuing a walk this week while striking out 9. OF Anthony Raglani was 8 for 17 with 2 doubles and 2 HR.

Who's Not - 3B Blake DeWitt was just 3 for 14 with a triple and he missed the last 2 games. RHP Zach Hammes gave up 2 earned runs in 3.1 innings; his last appearance came as a reliever and hopefully he'll remain in the pen for the rest of the season. LHP Clayton Kershaw allowed 4 ER and 4 walks in 4 innings in his second Double A start.

Who to Watch - OF Xavier Paul returned from a leg injury and went 5 for 8 with a pair of dingers. The 22 year old has put up respectable numbers in the pitcher-friendly Southern League and could reach the bigs sometime next year.

High A - Inland Empire

Who's Hot - 1B Russell Mitchell went 13 for 30 with 5 doubles and a HR. OF Jamie Hoffman was 4 for 11. LHP Alberto Bastardo had 2 starts this week, giving up 3 ER in 10.2 innings.

Who's Not - 2B Travis Denker was 4 for 16. SS Ivan De Jesus went 4 for 17. RHP 's Javy Guerra and Jesus Castillo allowed 6 ER in 4.1 innings.

Who to Watch - 3B Josh Bell was recently promoted from Great Lakes, where he posted an .828 OPS with 15 HR in 107 games. He also committed 35 errors, which leads all Dodger minor leaguers. After being promoted, he's struggled through his first 10 games with a .179 average and just 1 HR. Still, he's the Dodgers' best power prospect outside of Andy LaRoche and should return to High A to begin next season.

Low A - Great Lakes

Who's Hot - OF Trayvon Robinson is 6 for his last 19 with a pair of stolen bases. RHP Josh Wall went 5.2 scoreless in his last start, recording his first win since July 7th. RHP Steven Johnson went a career high 8 innings, allowing just 1 run with no walks and 6 strikeouts to record his 3rd win of the season.

Who's Not - 2B Preston Mattingly went 5 for 22. Scott Van Slyke was 0 for 14. LHP Miguel Sanfler allowed 2 runs and 3 walks in an inning of work.

Who to Watch - 3B Brian Mathews posted solid numbers in the Pioneer League before replacing Josh Bell on the Loons and he's raked. He's hitting .375/.429/.469 in 8 games since his promotion. He'll turn 20 later this month.

Who's Not - OF Jovanny Rosario was 4 for 26 with a HR. 1B Jaime Ortiz was 2 for 21 with a HR. LHP Wilfredo Diaz allowed 5 ER in 2.2 innings.

Who to Watch - 3B Austin Gallagher has done surprisingly well in his pro debut, with a line of .285/.357.431. There's a legit 3B prospect at every level ahead of him and one behind him. so he'll have to surprise everyone to make a name for himself in this system.

And the results are in

The draft deadline has passed and we now know who will be part of the Dodgers' organization. I'll share my thoughts as to who was signed and who the Dodgers let get away.

First Day: 5 of 6 picks signed

The Dodgers quickly signed most of their early picks. I was lucky enough to attend the game at which first rounder Chris Withrow's signing was announced. Austin Gallagher got in the system quickly, as Andrew Lambo, James Adkins and Michael Watt all made their way to rookie ball shortly after. It should be noted that all of the Dodgers' first day draft picks signed for slot money, while guys like Watt and Gallagher were thought to be overdrafts. The Dodgers spent just under $3 million on their first day picks.

But the big story, and biggest disappointment, was the failure to sign Kyle Blair. Leading up to the draft, Blair was rated as the 50th best prospect as he posted a 0.38 ERA with 124 strikeouts and 11 walks in 74 innings during his senior campaign. He features a fastball that sits in the low 90s and an impressive curveball. His 6'3 200 lbs frame and athleticism are also assets. But Blair's perceived bonus demands, thought to be $1.5 million, scared clubs away and caused him to fall to the Dodgers in the 5th round. Now here's a couple questions: were the Dodgers aware of Blair's lofty price tag and, if so, why did they select him if they werent willing to pay it? It seems as though the Dodgers took a flier on him, hoping his demands would drop as the summer temps rose, but to no avail.

Are the purse strings tied? The last non first/supplemental first round pick to receive a seven figure bonus was Andy LaRoche in 2003, a year before McCourt took over. Is McCourt afraid to ruffle the feathers of the commissioners office? There's no penalty for going over slot, meaning paying more for a player than the commissioner's office recommends. As a matter of fact, during this year's college world series, the announcers mentioned that Alex White, the Dodgers' 14th round pick in 2006, turned down a bonus in excess of a million dollars from LA to play at North Carolina. But if that's the case, then why wasnt there enough to get Blair in the fold?

Who do we blame? Logan White has seemingly had bad luck with signing early draft picks in odd years. In 2003, third rounder Cory Van Allen chose Baylor over the Dodgers and was a fifth round pick by the Nationals in 2006. And I'm sure I dont have to rehash the Luke Hochevar fiasco of 2005. What troubled me was, from the beginning, White seemed to be very doubtful about his ability to sign Blair. Did the scouting department have the information about his bonus demands? Was it McCourt or Colletti who refused to sign off on the deal? Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever have the answers to these questions.

To conclude, it was my opinion in June that the Blair pick would make or break the draft. I'm not too high on Adkins or Watt, though Gallagher has been a pleasant surprise. Withrow seems like the prototypical Logan White pitcher and Lambo could be a steal if he keeps his head on straight. But Blair would have made this a much better take. Hopefully, some second day picks can make an impact.

Second Day: 17 of 34 picks signed

Again, the Dodgers selected several talents who fell due to bonus demands and failed to sign most of them. The one exception may be Tim Sexton, a Junior College freshman who was bought out of his scholarship to College of Charleston for $123,000. Sexton draws comparisons to Bronson Arroyo for his lanky frame and extreme drop-and-drive delivery. He wont blow hitters away, but he has a four pitch repetoire with obvious deception. He had a nice debut, striking out 6 while allowing just 2 hits in 5 scoreless for Great Lakes.

But now, to those who got away. Rob Rasmussen (Rd 25) is a petite southpaw with a marginal fastball, but he's dominated amateur competition with a plus curve that he'll take to UCLA. Taylor Cole (Rd 24) is an athletic righthander/infielder from Nevada who will likely play both ways at BYU. Devin Fuller (14) is a guy I compared to Jon Meloan. He's built like a linebacker and throws with a good amount of effort. Like Meloan, Fuller will likely end up in the pen. And to boot, both were drafted out of the state of Arizona. However, unlike Meloan, Fuller will be pitching for the Arizona State Sun Devils this fall. Nathan Carter (Rd 23), brother of D Back's farmhand Chris, is an athletic IF/OF with plus speed and surprising power. However, he'll fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot in the Air Force.

The Dodgers did manage to sign 13 of their first 14 second day picks (Hope that's not too confusing). Justin Miller (Rd 6) and Dan Danielson (Rd 7) are both projectible righthanders who figure to add velocity as they fill out their frames. Alex Garabedian (Rd 8) and Jessie Mier (Rd 12) add much needed catching depth to the system. Jaime Pedroza (Rd 9), brother of former Dodgers' and current D Ray's prospect Sergio, offers a similar amount of offensive potential. Joris Bert (Rd 19) will go down as the first French born player to sign a pro contract. His speed allows him to bat at the top of the order and play centerfield.

Signing some of the higher ceiling guys, especially Blair, would have made this draft much more palatable. Overall I'd say this wasnt one of Logan White's stronger efforts. Aside from 2005, this may be the least talent infused into the farm in a White directed draft. I hope I'm proven wrong, but based on what I have to go on, I'm not too impressed.
