Weekly Review

Las Vegas

Hot Pitcher

Building on a strong second start of the season, RHP Jon Meloan was even more dominant this week. After allowing just 1 earned run on the 10th, the big right-hander pitched 6 shutout innings and allowed only 1 hit this past Wednesday. He did walk 4 batters, however, and his command has been shaky so far. But he's struck out 13 batters in 16 innings and has a 1.69 ERA, which is best among 51s' starters.

Cold Pitcher

Another week and it just keeps getting worse for LHP Greg Miller. The former top prospect still can't find the strike zone and, in 3 appearances this week, he allowed 6 walks in 2 innings. The stuff is still there, so if he ever manages to gain control of his pitches, Miller could be a fine addition to the Dodgers' bullpen.

Hot Hitter

3B Terry Tiffee just keeps on hitting, doing so in every game this week. He went 11 for 26 with a pair of doubles and is leading the PCL with a .508 BA, a .542 OBP and a 1.296 OPS. With Nomar's activation, Tiffee's fate has been sealed as a non-starter with the Dodgers. However, if a team out there gets desperate enough, they could trade for the minor league veteran. Happy 29th birthday tomorrow Terry!

Cold Hitter

It's hard to imagine that going 6 for 25 is an improvement, but for struggling OF Xavier Paul, he'll take any hits he can get right now. 3 of those hits went for doubles and Paul even managed to steal a base. However, his .534 OPS needs drastic improvement and he needs to cut down on his strikeouts, as he's done so in a third of his at bats. Let's hope X-Man can shrug off his slow start and get to raking soon.

Jacksonville

Hot Pitcher

Even with his 1.83 ERA on the season, this is LHP Clayton Kershaw's first appearance as the Suns' hot pitcher. This week he had two starts and ended up giving up just 1 ER in 11.2 innings. He also struck out 11 and allowed only 10 baserunners. The 20 year old isn't dominating as most expected, but he's more than holding his own against much older competition.

Cold Pitcher

After being placed on the 40 man roster, much was expected of RHP Mario Alvarez coming into the season. However, Mario has been anything but super thus far. This week, Alvarez pitched 6 innings and struck out 5, but he also allowed 4 ER which raised his ERA to 6.75 on the season. He'll continue to work in the rotation, though he might be better suited for a relief role down the road.

Hot Hitter

The other 20 year old on the Suns, SS Ivan De Jesus Jr, had himself a good week. Although going 8 for 28 won't win him many awards, he managed to draw 6 walks, smacked a pair of doubles and hit his first career grand slam. Ivan has shown great discipline at the plate, drawing 12 walks compared to 10 strikeouts. His .446 OBP is third in the Southern League. The glove and the eye will get him to the bigs, though I doubt it'll be with the Dodgers.

Cold Hitter

Even though C Lucas May was 3 for 6 with a double and a HR this week, it's the 6 at bats that lands him in this category. May hasn't played since the 15th, presumably due to an injury. I haven't been able to find any details of his missed time but the Suns' roster lists him as being active. Hopefully he'll return to action soon.

It doesn't get much hotter than RHP Tim Sexton's start on Saturday: 18 up, 18 down. Unfortunately, due to strict pitch limits, Sexton wasn't able to flirt with perfection for 3 more frames. And Tim's first start of the week wasn't bad either: 6 IP, 5 Hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's. Looks like that $123,000 bonus is already paying dividends.

And the reason I pluralized this category is to give LHP James Adkins props as well. The big lefty took the hill twice this week as well and had himself a dominant performance on Sunday. Over 6 scoreless innings, Adkins struck out a career high 11 batters while allowing just 4 baserunners. His first start was pretty good too; 5 innings of 1 ER ball. Adkins' 1.89 ERA is good for third in the California League. Tim and Jim give the 66ers an intimidating pair at the top of their rotation.

Cold Pitcher

Making the list for the third time, though his first in the "cold" section, RHP Javy Guerra finally saw his command get the best of him. A season high 4 walks led to a season high 4 ER in just 2.1 innings. Guerra has already walked 10 walks in 10.1 innings, though he has struck out 12 and held opposing batters to a .184 average. But expect more of these type of outings as long as the walks stay plentiful.

Hot Hitter

A 7 for 25 week isn't particularly newsworthy, but C Carlos Santana has reached base in every game he's played this year. He's also shown a keen batting eye, walking 13 times compared to 10 strikeouts, leading to a .435 OBP which is 8th best in the California League. Santana is still rough behind the plate, but his offensive resurgence has justified him ranking in the Dodgers' Top 30 Prospect list.

Cold Hitter

Another week and more struggles for OF Trayvon Robinson. This week's 2 for 22 performance has lowered his OPS to .454. It's about time that Robinson moves back down to Great Lakes, even with the crowded outfield situation. Or he could move all the way down to the Rookie Leagues when they start up in June. Either way, his time in High A is almost up.

Great Lakes

Hot Pitcher

The pitcher who's gotten off to the best start in the Dodgers' system is RHP Justin Miller. In his first four starts this year, Miller has posted a miniscule 0.44 ERA and struck out 17 batters compared to allowing just 5 walks in 20.1 innings. This week, Justin didn't allow an earned run in 10.1 innings and he had more strikeouts (10) than baserunners allowed (8). Despite his being relatively new to pitching, Miller could find himself in High A fairly soon.

Cold Pitcher

RHP Kyle Smit has taken a turn for the worse since his first start. This week, Smit lasted just 3.2 innings after giving up 5 ER and allowing 3 walks while failing to record a strikeout. That's 2 outings in a row of allowing 5 ER. It's still early and he's still just 20, so give him some time to find the stuff he had in his debut.

Hot Hitter

Making his second appearance on this list, OF Andrew Lambo turned on the power switch this week. Lambo crushed 3 HR and 4 doubles, hitting safely in every game . He's now 5th in the Midwest League in SLG (.656) and 8th in OPS (.1.044). Andrew's still striking out more than I'd like and he only walked once this week, but his plate discipline isn't a long-term issue in my mind.

Cold Hitter

After a hot start, 1B Brian Mathews has cooled considerably. Going just 2 for 15 this week has lowered his batting average to .224, though he did have a homer on Sunday. I don't expect his OPS to stay at .675 for long and I expect him to break out of this slump soon.

Weekly Review

Las Vegas

Hot Pitcher

5 days after making his first start since 2006, RHP Jon Meloan bounced back with 6 strong innings, in which he allowed just 6 baserunners and 1 earned run while striking out 6. With Esteban Loaiza giving way in the Dodgers' rotation to Hong Chih Kuo, Meloan may be next in line if Kuo suffers yet another injury. He'd also be a prime candidate to come up if a reliever comes up lame.

Cold Pitcher

It's been a rough week for RHP Justin Orenduff, who made his first two Triple A starts of his career. Orenduff, a supplemental first round pick in 2004, had missed much of the previous two seasons due to a shoulder injury. Justin made 2 starts this week but only pitched a total of 7 innings while allowing 5 earned runs and 9 walks. While the Pacific Coast League isn't the friendliest for pitchers, Orenduff will need to throw more strikes to hope to be effective.

Hot Hitter

Since the lineup is mostly absent of any real prospects, I'll give props here to 3B Terry Tiffee. The non-roster invitee has done nothing but rake since his assignment to Vegas, and he's leading the league in batting average, on-base percentage and OPS. This week, Tiffee went 14 for 22 with 4 doubles and a pair of homeruns. The corner infielder will turn 29 a week from tomorrow and doesn't figure to see much time in the bigs this year, but it's still good to see him doing so well.

Cold Hitter

The "platinum sombrero" is a rare occurrence in Baseball, but OF Xavier Paul managed to achieve this feat on Monday. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the phrase, it means that Xavier went 0 for 5 with 5 strikeouts. On the week, he was 3 for 20 with 9 strikeouts. Hopefully Paul can work things out and get some offense going.

Jacksonville

Hot Pitcher

After giving up 6 hits in his first 3 innings of 2008, RHP James McDonald was almost untouchable in his second start. J Mac only went 4 innings (due to a strict, early-season pitch limit) but he gave up just 1 hit and walked a pair while striking out 4. The lanky righty is scheduled to take the hill again tomorrow and let's hope he can continue his recent success.

Cold Pitcher

LHP Marlon Arias' Double A debut was brilliant, in which he allowed just 1 hit over 5 scoreless innings. But his next time out, Marlon gave up 6 earned runs in just 2 innings. Arias is a fringe prospect at the moment, so getting that last start out of the way and turning things around quickly is a must.

Hot Hitter

The 20 year old SS Ivan De Jesus Jr continues to impress against much older competition. He went 7 for 20 this week with 6 walks, yielding an OBP approaching .500. Ivan has some speed but doesn't use it much on the basepaths. He's also not a power threat. But a slick fielding shortstop who can get on base will likely draw a lot of interest from numerous clubs in July.

Cold Hitter

OF Jamie Hoffman finally collected his first Double A hit on Monday, but he was still just 5 for 23 this week with 6 strikeouts and no walks. Hoffman also has just two extra basehits this year (both doubles). Still a good outfielder with good speed, Jamie will hope to improve his hitting in coming weeks.

Inland Empire

Hot Pitcher

"Wild Thing" RHP Javy Guerra continued his erratic ways this week, lasting just 4 innings while walking 3, but he didn't allow a run on 2 hits and struck out 4. He's already walked 6 batters in 8 innings this season, but he's also struck out 9 and scattered only 3 hits. Guerra may be better suited for a relief role down the road, but as long as he keeps runs off the board, I'm sure most teams would be happy to have him.

Cold Pitcher

Selected in the supplemental first round just a year ago, LHP James Adkins had an impressive debut in 2007 and a good start of the season in 2008. But his second time out wasn't so successful, as James allowed 3 earned runs in 4 innings. Adkins is scheduled to start again on Tuesday and he'll be back home facing the team he beat in his first outing: Visalia.

Hot Hitter

C Carlos Santana has had a unique career path. He found himself ending the 2006 season in Vero Beach's outfield, was converted to catcher that offseason and spent 2007 behind the plate in Low A. The position change probably affected his bat, as Carlos hit just .223 in 86 games with the Loons. But his bat has rebounded this season, and he went 9 for 23 this week with 2 doubles, a triple, a HR and 6 walks. If Santana can hit nearly this well all season, the Dodgers will have another very good catching prospect on their hands.

Cold Hitter

Another hitter who struggled in Low A last year, but found himself promoted a level this season, is OF Trayvon Robinson. The 2005 10th rounder hasn't had the same success at the plate as Santana, as Tray has just 5 hits in his last 28 at bats. The switch-hitting speed demon also has just a single stolen base in 2 attempts. Robinson is still young, at age 20, and has plenty of time left to develop into a quintessential leadoff hitter.

Great Lakes

Hot Pitcher

Coming off of a 5 inning, 1 run start, RHP Justin Miller managed 5 innings of shutout ball his second time out. The 20 year old sinkerballer has allowed a .243 opponent's batting average and a 2.43 ground to fly ratio. Left-handed hitters are batting just .083 against him and he's walked only 3 batters in his first 10 innings this season. While Miller is relatively raw, his sinker seems to be overpowering Low A hitters and he could find himself in the California League before long.

Cold Pitcher

It must be quite a trip, to be pitching in the Dominican Summer League one year and full season A ball the next. LHP Geison Aguasviva hasn't fared so well in the states, as his 9.00 ERA suggests, but the 20 year old should be given plenty of time to adjust. The good news is he has struck out 9 batters in 7 innings compared to just 1 walk. But the .355 opponent's batting average suggests that being precise may not be enough.

Hot Hitter

Everyone knows that James Loney has gotten off to a hot start with the big club, hitting in all 12 games to start the season. What people may not realize is OF Jovanny Rosario has had the same type of hot start with the Great Lakes Loons. Rosario has collected hits in all 11 games so far, and he went 9 for 23 with a double and a pair of stolen bases this week. Jovanny has 4 useable tools, lacking only power in games, and should move up the ladder quickly.

Cold Hitter

Not only is 2B Preston Mattingly trying to live up to the expectations that come with being the son of an All Star, he's also trying to live up to being a supplemental first round pick in 2006. So far, he's struggling. Mattingly was 2 for 22 this week with 7 strikeouts. Preston is long on tools but short on polish and will need to vastly improve his ability to hit pro pitching in order to be productive.

Week in Review - 4/03 to 4/06

Opening day has come and gone, but this looks like it's going to be a very interesting season. Whether it's players returning from injury or phenoms biding their time until a callup, plenty of prospects stand to gain or lose much due to their performance in 2008. And now, with just 4 games having been played, let's take a look at how they've started.

Las Vegas

Hot Pitchers

While he's not much of a prospect, RHP Miguel Pinango has started the season with a strong debut. He lasted 6 innings and allowed just 2 runs while walking 1 and striking out 5. Unfortunately, his opening day gem was lost by the bullpen and he'll have to wait until his next turn in the rotation for his first win.

Don't be fooled by the 6.00 ERA; LHP Greg Miller has started the season strong. Even after picking up the loss due to a bad inning in Friday's game, Miller has pitched 3 innings and walked only 1 batter. He's also struck out 6. If he can keep throwing strikes, Greg would be a valuable addition to the Dodgers' bullpen.

Cold Pitchers

After two years of dominating minor league hitters as a relief pitcher, RHP Jon Meloan has been moved back into the rotation. And he didn't get off to a good start. He lasted 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits. The good news is he didn't allow a walk and struck out 3, but I maintain that he's best suited coming out of the pen.

Hot Hitters

Though they don't qualify as prospects, 1B/3B Terry Tiffee and IF John Lindsey have started the year with identical .471/.471/.647 lines. I doubt either one would be called up before September, and probably not even then.

Cold Hitters

OF Xavier Paul put together a solid season at Double A Jacksonville last year and was penciled in as the 51's starting CF on opening day. He has enough speed and more than enough arm to play there, but his bat hasn't come around just yet. Paul has collected just 2 hits in his first 4 games, though he has drawn 3 walks. He has some value at the next level as a backup who can play all 3 positions in the outfield and as a pinch runner.

Jacksonville

Hot Pitchers

A year after tossing a no-hitter in the California League, LHP Marlon Arias made his way up to Jacksonville despite posting a 5.32 ERA. However, his first start in Double A was very promising, as he allowed just 1 unearned run in 5 innings. He's a fringe prospect who could establish himself with a strong season.

Arias' teammate with the 66ers, RHP Jesus Castillo, joins him in the Suns' rotation. And like Arias, Castillo enjoyed a successful debut with the team. Jesus went 5 innings, allowing just 1 run and struck out 3. He'll turn 24 next month so his prospect clock is running out.

Cold Pitchers

It's hard to call a 3.00 disappointing, but much was expected out of LHP Clayton Kershaw after dominating during the spring in the major league camp. Kershaw lasted only 3 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks on his way to a loss. He did manage to strikeout 4 batters, but it wasn't his best performance.

Another top prospect struggled, as RHP James McDonald took the ball on opening day and was hit hard. McDonald allowed 6 basehits and 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 2 and walking none. McDonald's stuff isn't overpowering and he he has very good command, which can work against him when he faces more advanced hitters. I do expect him to bounce back but I'm not sure he'll reach the majors this season.

Hot Hitters

The youngest player on the team, SS Ivan De Jesus Jr, has gotten off to one of the hottest starts. So far, he's hitting .385/.429/.538 with a pair of doubles. He's yet to draw a walk, something he's done very well over the past few years, but he's also struck out only once. With Furcal as the starting SS and Hu nipping at his heels, it's hard to imagine a scenario where De Jesus Jr gets a lot of playing time in LA. I see him as one of the Dodgers' most valuable trade pieces this season.

Lucas May led the 66ers with 25 HR last season, and now his teammate 1B/3B Russell Mitchell leads the Suns with a pair early in 2008. Mitchell provides a middle of the order bat and has some versatility with his ability to play third base. He's not much of a prospect but worth keeping an eye on.

Cold Hitters

4 games must seem like a career to OF Jamie Hoffman, as he's 0 for 8 to start the season. He's playing RF instead of CF as well, so he's expected to hit. Hoffman's not much of a HR threat but he should get his fair share of doubles and some triples. His 2 walks and 2 stolen bases are a good sign.

The guy who displaced Hoffman, OF Adam Godwin, has gotten off to a slow start as well. Godwin is known as a base stealer but he's yet to swipe a bag. He does have 2 more hits than Hoffman, but the .444 OPS isn't something to brag about. When Godwin and Hoffman start hitting, they'll give the Suns a great 1-2 punch at the top of the order.

Inland Empire

Hot Pitchers

2007 supplemental first round pick LHP James Adkins pitched well in Low A and has had continued success to begin his High A campaign. Adkins pitched 4 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits and a walk while striking out a pair. The real test for Adkins will come when he reaches Double A, which could happen sooner rather than later.

RHP Javy Guerra, AKA Wild Thing, came back to Inland Empire for a second go-round and had a confusing start. On one hand, he only allowed 1 run in 4 innings and struck out 5. On the other hand, he did walk 3 batters. 3 years removed from Tommy John surgery, it's time for Guerra to regain his command. But if he doesn't he still could make it as a middle reliever with a fastball that touches 97 and a plus curve.

Cold Pitchers

The Dodgers signed one player last June for considerably more than his slot recommendation, and that was RHP Tim Sexton. He joined Adkins in Great Lakes and followed him up to the 66ers. But Sexton's first outing wasn't nearly as good as Adkins'. Tim gave up 3 ER on 6 Hits in 4.2 Innings. His all around stuff isn't great, but he has 4 pitches and good command with a deceptive delivery.

LHP's Cody White and David Pfeiffer were both draft-and-follows who signed prior to the 2004 draft. 4 years later, they find themselves in the California League and with bloated ERA's. White started on opening day but allowed 3 runs in 5 innings while striking out just 1 batter. Pfeiffer came in as a reliever and gave up 3 runs in 1 inning while walking a pair and striking out none. This is likely a make-or-break year for both of them.

Hot Hitters

Coming into the spring 25 lbs lighter seems to have helped 3B Josh Bell. The switch-hitting slugger is off to a great start, batting .471 with 2 doubles in his first 4 games. He ranked as the 11th best prospect in the Dodgers' system coming into the season and he should rank much higher with a good year.

Little known OF Ryan Rogowski has come out hitting as well. He led all Dodger prospects with 39 stolen bases last season and drew 54 walks. Ryan hasn't been running much early on but he's hitting .400 with 3 walks in 4 games. Rogowski profiles as a leadoff hitting CF who gets on base but doesn't hit for much power.

Cold Hitters

Last year, the Dodgers drafted 2B Jaime Pedroza after having drafted his brother a few years earlier. Pedroza was highly regarded in college for his hitting ability and put it on display in his pro debut. But Jaime hasn't started hitting just yet, as he's collected only 1 hit in his first 14 at bats. The move off of SS hurts his value a little, but staying in the middle infield lets his bat play up.

OF Trayvon Robinson was promoted to High A this year despite his 2007 season, not because of it. He's very raw at the plate and in the field, and he's struggled to get on base early on. 2 of Tray's 3 hits have been doubles, though I'm not sure his coaches want him to consistently try to hit for power. He has blazing speed but he needs to draw more walks to utilize it.

Great Lakes

Hot Pitchers

After a disappointing stint with the Loons last season, RHP Kyle Smit has been looking forward to showing what he can do. And in his first start, he was very impressive. 5 innings of shutout ball with 6 strikeouts and only 4 baserunners. Still just 20 years old, Smit has the chance to make a name for himself in 2008.

Last year's 6th round pick RHP Justin Miller had a strong showing in the GCL, including 7 innings of shutout ball in the playoffs. His Low A debut was very good as well, allowing just 1 run in 5 innings with 4 strikeouts. Miller's sinker is good enough for the low minors, but he'll need to continue to polish his slider and develop a changeup to have success at higher levels.

Cold Pitchers

A year and a half removed from Tommy John surgery, RHP Bryan Morris made strides in the spring and has regained his low to mid 90s velocity. However, in his first start in more than a year, he allowed 3 earned runs and ended up with a no-decision. The silver lining was the fact that he did not walk a batter. Usually, pitchers coming off of TJ surgery have problems with their control. So that, coupled with his 6 strikeouts, doesn't make this start too bad.

Two years ago, RHP Steven Johnson began the year at Double A. Granted, he was filling in for an injured Justin Orenduff and only made two appearances, but still. Last season he spent the whole year in Great Lakes and he's back for more. Unfortunately, this year didn't start with a bang. 7 hits and 3 ER in 4.2 innings won't help him move up the ladder, so he'll need to work hard to maximize the effectiveness of his otherwise mediocre stuff.

Hot Hitters

When the Dodgers drafted OF/1B Andrew Lambo in the 4th round, they got a steal. They got a first round bat who fell due to perceived character issues. But so far, there've been no problems and Andrew has done nothing but flat out hit. Lambo's hit in all 4 games this season, including a walk-off double in Sunday's contest. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a 66ers uniform before the year is over.

A pair of returning Loons, 1B/3B Brian Mathews and 2B Preston Mattingly, have hit the ground running. Mathews has a pair of doubles and 3 walks to contribute to his 1.068 OPS. Mattingly already has a HR and hasn't yet committed an error. Both infielders should get plenty of playing time as the season rolls on.

Cold Hitters

20 year old Dominican 3B Pedro Baez started strong in the GCL last year, taking a rehabbing Pedro Martinez yard in the process. But it's been slow going for Pedro in 2008, as he's gotten just 2 hits in his first 16 at bats and has struck out 4 times without walking once. His slow start is understandable, given Baez's raw skillset. However, his tools are undeniable and he's well worth the wait.

OF Erik Kanaby hit .338 last season with the Ogden Raptors and posted a .427 OBP. He has plenty of speed but needs to work on his baserunning. Though he's played all 4 games thus far, he has just 2 hits in 12 at bats. However, he already has 2 stolen bases and a walk. The OF is crowded, so Kanaby will have to start hitting soon to keep his playing time.

Las Vegas' roster is up

on MiLB.com. Some notes:

The pitching is where the prospects are, though there aren't many. LHP Greg Miller makes his third appearance with the 51's after trying to find his control there in '06 and '07. Miller started last year in the rotation, but I'm not sure what the Dodgers' plans are for him this season. RHP Justin Orenduff moves up to the 51's and is a final step away from breaking into the bigs. RHP Jon Meloan is apparently going to start this year in the rotation, though I'm not sure he'll end up there. RHP Jason Johnson, RHP Chan Ho Park, RHP Miguel Pinango and LHP Eric Stults are the candidates for the other two spots.

The infield is completely devoid of anything resembling a prospect. C AJ Ellis has shown some decent on-base ability, but he'll be 27 in a week. 31 year old 1B John Lindsey hit 30 HR between Jacksonville and Vegas in 2007. Utility man extraordinare Ramon Martinez could play 2B or SS. Kevin Howard could play 2B or 3B. Terry Tiffee is limited to the corners. Rex Rundgren has a cool name.

The outfield has a single prospect, Xavier Paul, who has the speed to play CF but it probably better suited to play RF due to his sometimes circuitous routes. Paul's OF arm has graded as the best in the system the past 5 years running. Wilkin Ruan had 20 OF assists last season with Vegas and Jason Repko also has a good arm. 32 year old George Lombard had an impressive spring with the Dodgers, hitting .474 with 3 HR. John-Ford Griffin hit 26 HR last season with Toronto's Triple A affiliate.

Inland Empire's roster is out

on the team's official website. Some notes:

Pitching staff has some potential. 2007 draftees LHP James Adkins and RHP Tim Sexton headline the staff and should give the 66ers a solid 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. RHP Javy Guerra returns to High A after struggling with his command most of the year. RHP Josh Wall moves up a rung after a successful season with the Loons. Lefties Alberto Bastardo, Cody White and David Pfeiffer should contend for the last starting spot. In the pen, LHP Brent Leach hopes to have a healthy season after missing most of 2007. He's joined by LHP Garrett White, RHP Jordan Pratt and RHP Paul Koss to provide some stability in the relief corps.

The infield leaves something to be desired. 3B Josh Bell is definitely the biggest bat in the lineup and he'll likely be the team's cleanup hitter. 2007 pick SS Jaime Pedroza has some potential on offense but his lack of a clear position defensively leaves his prospect status in limbo. 1B Eduardo Perez has some pop but he's not much of a prospect. Carlos Santana and Gabriel Gutierrez will share catching duties, with Santana getting the majority of the work behind the plate.

The outfield is without a good prospect, though there are some solid guys who should see time in Double A before the season is over. Ryan Rogowski led LA's farm system with 39 steals last year and figures to be the team's leadoff hitter. Matt Berezay led this group in HR last year with 13, so he figures to get a good chunk of PT. Thomas Giles hit well in Low A in 2007 but struggled after a callup to Jacksonville. Drew Locke didn't get many AB last season but has some power potential. Trayvon Robinson, who had some serious problems offensively in Great Lakes last year was moved up more due to the fact that he likely wouldn't have gotten enough playing time there this season. He'll likely split time with Rogowski in CF.

Great Lakes' roster is up

on the official website. Some notes:

The pitching staff looks pretty deep, led by 2006 first rounder RHP Bryan Morris, who missed the 2007 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Morris should be the staff's ace, but if all goes well I don't expect him to stay in Low A for long. 2006 5th rounder RHP Kyle Smit returns to the Loons after a disappointing debut there last season. RHP Steven Johnson, who posted a 4.85 ERA in Great Lakes last year, is back to improve upon his 2007 performance. 2007 6th rounder RHP Justin Miller gets called up from the GCL to make his full season debut. One of the more surprising names is LHP Geison Aguasviva, who had spent the past two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. The 20 year old southpaw made the Dodgers' Top 30 Prospect list last year and should have a spot in the rotation.

The hitting looks even more impressive, with an infield consisting of 1B Jaime Ortiz, 2B Preston Mattingly and 3B Pedro Baez. Ortiz had spent the last 2 years in rookie ball, and he broke out with Ogden in 2007 by hitting 11 HR. Mattingly is coming off of a disappointing full season debut and needs to get back on track if he wants to maintain his prospect status. Baez was signed last January and made his Dodger debut in the GCL last summer where he hit .274 with 3 HR. He's currently #10 on the Dodgers' Top 30 Prospect list. The catching will likely be shared by Kenley Jansen and Alex Garabedian. Both big guys will try to improve upon their offensive output from a year ago.

The outfield looks equally impressive, with RF Andrew Lambo being the biggest name. Lambo was a 4th round draft pick last June and dominated the GCL with a batting line of .343/.440/.519. CF Jovanny Rosario showed off 4 plus tools in Ogden last season, and could bat leadoff where he'd put his good speed to good use. OF Scott Van Slyke returns to the Loons after struggling with the bat most of 2007. He'll compete for time with OF Travis Vetters, who led Ogden with 14 HR last season.

The complete roster can be viewed here:

Jacksonville's roster is up

On MiLB.com. Some notes:

LHP Clayton Kershaw and RHP James McDonald team up for an intimidating 1-2 punch at the top of the Suns' rotation. The rest of the rotation will likely consist of RHP Jesus Castillo, LHP Marlon Arias and RHP Mario Alvarez. The bullpen has some potential, with RHP Yhency Brazoban and RHP Zach Hammes likely alternating closer duties. RHP Cory Wade, RHP Brian Akin and RHP Kyle Wilson give Jacksonville good depth in middle relief.

The offense is a little less inspiring, but there are some promising High A graduates making their Double A debuts. C Lucas May will show if his power is for real, after slugging 25 HR in the California League last season. 1B Russell Mitchell adds another power bat in the middle of the lineup, collecting 22 HR as May's teammate in 2007. The most interesting infield prospect is SS Ivan DeJesus, who won't turn 21 years old until the first of May. He's likely going to leadoff or bat second, as he shows adequate contact skills and exceptional on-base ability. The outfield includes two centerfielders in Adam Godwin and Jamie Hoffman. Godwin was drafted as a leadoff hitting speedster, and he stole 24 bases in 32 attempts last season. Hoffman will likely move to a corner OF spot, which he should handle well after collecting 17 OF assists with Inland Empire last year.
