Minor League Recap - 4/6/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 6-5

Tony Abreu - 2 for 6, K
James Loney - 0 for 5, R, BB, K
Andy LaRoche - 2 for 6, 2 R, E
Delwyn Young - 3 for 5, 2 2B's, RBI, R, BB, K

DJ Houlton - 4.2 IP, 3 Hits, 2 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K's
Mark Alexander - 2 IP, 3 Hits, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 2 K's

Different game, same story. For the second time in as many nights, the 51's allowed a walk-off hit, this time to Angel's prospect Brandon Wood in the bottom of the 12th. Houlton was decent in his debut, though not getting through the 5th is unimpressive. Reliever Eric Hull and billionaire Matt White shut Salt Lake down for just over 3 innings. At the plate, Abreu and LaRoche picked up a couple hits each. Delwyn Young had a nice game. Loney struggled. The 51's led 5-3 heading into the 9th and Alexander came in for the save. After hitting the leadoff batter and allowing a double to put runners at second and third, Mark retired the next two batters and the game seemed to be in hand. But back to back RBI singles tied the game and the teams headed to extra innings. Another inning by Alexander was followed by an inning from Luis Gonzalez, but with one out in the 12th, Wood put the game away with a shot over the LF wall. The 51's look for their first win of the season tomorrow at 1:00pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 5=0

Chin Lung Hu - 1 for 3, BB, CS
Cory Dunlap - 1 for 4
Xavier Paul - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, K
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 K's

Jon Meloan - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's

Strong pitching won the game for the Suns today, starting with a brilliant outing from William Juarez. Juarez scattered 7 hits and 2 walks over 7 shutout innings of work, adding 2 strikeouts. That performance was followed by 2 dominant frames from Jon Meloan. 5 batters that faced Meloan went down swinging, the 6th (and last of the game) grounded out to Chin Lung Hu. Hu singled and added a walk, but was cut down trying to steal second. Dunlap and Raglani had hits, Raglani's was a 2 run Triple. Xavier Paul went hitless, but walked twice. The series continues tomorrow at 4pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 18-11

Ivan DeJesus Jr - 2 for 4, 2 R, RBI, BB, E
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, R, BB, K
Lucas May - 3 for 5, 2B, HR (1), 4 RBI, 3 R
Russell Mitchell - 3 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
Jamie Hoffman - 2 for 5, 2B, R, 2 RBI

Jesus Castillo - 2 IP, 5 Hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's
Mario Alvarez - 1 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, K

Well, the California League has always been known to favor hitters, and the 66ers' pitching staff did everything they could to hold up that tradition. Between the two teams, 29 Runs were scored on 31 hits. Ivan DeJesus Jr collected two more hits on the year, along with a walk. Blake DeWitt's bat is still cold. Lucas May and Russell Mitchell each went 3 for 5 with a HR; two different prospects really, with May moving behind the plate which gives him great versatility on defense and Mitchell being relegated to first base. Hoffman already has 6 hits on the young season, 3 of which have gone for extra bases (2 doubles and a HR). Every IE pitcher gave up at least a run, with Ramon Troncoso being the least worst after surrending one score on 2 hits while striking out the side in his inning of work. This is one day the pitching staff as a whole would like to forget. The 66ers go again tomorrow at 7pm.

Low A - Great Lakes won 3-1

Trayvon Robinson - 3 for 4, 2 R, RBI, SB, S
Josh Bell - 0 for 4, K
Carlos Santana - 0 for 3, BB, K
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 4, 2 K's
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 4, 2B, R

Steven Johnson - 4 IP, 3 Hits, ER, 2 BB's, 3 K's

Another win for the Loons, Steven Johnson put together a strong outing in his 2007 debut. The crafty righty (Well, he is...) allowed only one run on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3 in 4 innings. Michael Gardner and Jesus Rodriguez combined for 5 shutout innings in relief. At the plate, Trayvon Robinson stayed hot as he collected 3 more hits and his first stolen base of the year. Josh Bell, Carlos Santana and Kenley Jansen were held hitless, though Scott Van Slyke (Yes, he's the son of Andy) doubled in his first start of the season. Preston Mattingly was given the night off. The Loons look for the sweep tomorrow at 3:30pm.
