Player of the Day - Jaime Pedroza, 2B

After being demoted to Low A even though he hit .290 with Inland Empire last year, Pedroza is trying desperately to get back to California. Coming a triple short of the cycle should draw some attention, but a closer look at his numbers shows some negative trends. The .328/.421/.516 line is impressive on the surface, but 24 strikeouts in 18 games is very troubling.

An easy call for the Lambinator. Not only did he hit his 8th double in just 20 games, come a triple short of the cycle and draw a key walk in the 8th to spur a rally to tie the game, in the 10th inning he hit a walk-off HR to win it. A line of .321/.371/.556 from a 20 year old in Double A is pretty impressive.

It's been an up and down start to 2009 for Lindblom, who got a much needed win today. After going 5 innings and allowing just 1 earned run in his season debut, Josh allowed 10 earned over his next 8 innings before bouncing back this evening. His peripherals are great; he's striking out a batter an inning, he's allowed only 2 walks and 1 homerun in 18 innings. Hopefully he's put his troubles behind him and can get back to where he was last season.

However, Scott really needs to cut down on the strikeouts, having whiffed 16 times in his first 10 games. He's 22, so he'll need to advance quickly in order to maintain his prospect status.

Redding has struggled over his last two starts and Great Lakes was down 6-1 going into the 8th inning. A wild pitch and an Austin Gallagher single brought the Loons within 3. Tony Delmonico walked to load the bases for Kyle Russell, who proceded to strikeout. A Travis Vetters groundout would end the inning. But Russell had the chance to redeem himself in the 9th, with the bases again loaded, 2 outs and the Loons down by 1. Russell grounded a single into right field, plating the tying and go-ahead runs. In the bottom of the 9th, Guerra retired the side in order to preserve the victory. An impressive display of clutchitude from the Loons' hitters today.

Yeah, this is supposed to go to a minor leaguer, but Matt had such a great day I thought I'd recognize him here. It started when he doubled in the 4th to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Then he makes a great catch in the Top of the 5th to prevent a Rockies rally and comes up in the Bottom of the 5th and hits his second career Grand Slam (both have come at the expense of the Rockies). And to top it all off, he hits a solo HR to leadoff the 8th inning. Easily a career day for the 24 year old.

The Lambinator clubbed his first 2 HR of the season today, collecting his second straight 2 hit game. He's hit safely in 8 of his first 9 games and his .614 SLG ranks him 7th in the league. The one black mark on his stat line is 0 walks, though I'm sure he'll become a bit more patient once his average drops back down to earth.

Pedroza, who hit well in High A last year, was a surprise member of the Loons roster to open the season. It seems the Dodgers see both A level affiliates being similar enough to be considered interchangeable. The Great Lakes offense, after scoring 14 runs to open the season, has scored just 10 runs in the 4 games since. And even though Nathan Eovaldi's debut wasn't as impressive as others, the pitching staff needs minimal run support in order to keep the team in games.

Interestingly enough, he has half as many HR in 5 games this year (2) as he did in 112 games last year (4). I don't see him being much of a power hitter as he moves up, so I hope he concentrates more on contact and using all fields instead of getting pull happy.

Chattanooga's roster is set

Yes, the Dodgers have left Florida completely. No more Vero Beach. No more Jacksonville. Hopefully Tennessee will treat the organization half as well.

The starting rotation has some potential. RHP Josh Lindblom was an enormous surprise last year, when I brilliantly derided his being selected in the second round. However, thanks solely to my criticism, Josh turned in a dominant pro debut followed by a tremendously impressive spring training performance. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the majors this year, competing for a starting job in 2010. He'll likely be joined by LHP Victor Garate, who came out of nowhere last season to strike out 150 batters in 116 innings. However, enthusiasm must be tempered due to his age (24) and lack of truly dominant stuff. I foresee him as a reliever in the future in the mold of Brian Fuentes with a little less on his fastball. Then there are RHP Jesus Castillo and LHP James Adkins, who both spent time in Double A in 2008. Castillo put up decent numbers with underwhelming stuff, while Adkins put up underwhelming numbers with decent stuff.

The pen will likely be spearheaded by LHP Scott Elbert, who seems destined for a career as a reliever. Scottie put up dominant numbers in Jacksonville last year, posting more than twice as many strikeouts (46) as hits allowed (22). He needs to throw more strikes to be truly effective. RHP Matt Sartor will probably set up Elbert, and he proved last year that he's a workhorse by pitching 89.1 innings out of the pen. Matt also posted an ERA of 3.12 and struck out 106 batters while allowing just 7 HR and 24 walks. A few others to watch are RHP Paul Koss and LHP Brent Leach.

The infield will consist of C Lucas May, who struggled mightily with the bat but made progress with the glove after coverting to catching in late 2007. He's a good athlete with power, but he desperately needs to cut down on the strikeouts. 1B Russell Mitchell will look to build on a decent 2008 season, and 3B Josh Bell will make his Double A debut. Bell was hitting .273/.373/.455 before a knee injury ended his 2008 season. Now, the 22 year old switch-hitter will get to prove how much power he has in the pitcher-friendly Southern League.

The outfield is headlined by LF Andrew Lambo, who made quite an impression in his brief Double A debut by hitting .389/.421/.750 and followed that up with a .313 batting average in the Arizona Fall League. His path to the big leagues will be dictated by Manny Ramirez' presence on the roster. CF Jamie Hoffman makes a return to Double A after hitting .278/.350/.395 there last year. A surprise on the roster is the presence of OF Jovanny Rosario, who hit just .270/.315/.353 in Great Lakes last year. The soon-to-be 24 year old doesn't have the luxury of time on his side, but he's a speed demon on the basepaths and in the outfield.

The team does have four Top 10 prospects, though the overall talent of the club isn't quite championship caliber. The pitching staff looks decent enough, with the rotation being pretty good, but the overall depth and talent level of the position players isn't so strong (outside of Lambo and Bell). Still, it will be nice to watch those 4 develop and it's a good bet that you'll see them in LA sooner rather than later.

Monday, April 06, 2009

Great Lakes Loons roster is out

Starting with the pitching, 2008 first rounder RHP Ethan Martin will make his pro debut with the Loons. He'll be joined by RHP's Nathan Eovaldi and Robert Boothe, who both showed promise in the rookie leagues last season. The surprises, however, are the return of RHP Justin Miller and demotion of RHP Javy Guerra. Miller's outstading sinker netted him a 2.7:1 ground/fly ratio last season and he posted an ERA of 3.99 in 140 innings. However, his control eluded him leading to a league high 74 walks. Although Miller is 21 years old, he's still very new to pitching and should be given more time to develop. Guerra, on the other hand, spent his second consecutive season in High A ball in 2008, moving to the bullpen and having some success there. However, like Miller, control has been a major problem for Guerra. Hopefully both of them will improve in this area.

Another demotee is RHP Jordan Pratt, who is yet another promising arm with strike-zone allergies. He'll likely begin the season as the closer.RHP Bobby Blevins and RHP JonMichael Redding also appear on the roster, though their roles are uncertain. Great Lakes lacks a single southpaw in its staff. Overall, the rotation is very talented with good depth, though the relief corps leaves something to be desired.

The starting catcher will be Tony Delmonico, who converted from the infield over the winter. Tony hit .340 with 11 HR in his pro debut, though the Midwest League won't treat him so kindly. Around the infield, there's Austin Gallagher, who spent 78 games in the Inland Empire last season and hit .293 with 5 HR. It's a bit of a head-scratcher as to why a kid who held his own in High A would be sent down to Low A; perhaps the Dodgers would like him to work on his defense. At second base, there's another familiar face in Jaime Pedroza, who also spent last year with the 66ers. Shortstop will be occupied by Devaris Gordon, who wowed scouts with his athleticism in his debut. I'm honestly not sure if Gallagher will play third or move over to first, but the other corner infield spot will be occupied by a non-prospect.

The outfield has some familiar faces as well. Speedster Erik Kanaby returns to play CF, flanked by fellow two time Loon Alfredo Silverio and 2008 draft pick Kyle Russell. Both Silverio and Russell are capable of playing RF, so a coin toss will decide who plays left (or not).

Overall the team has some talent (3 top 10 prospects), with a strong rotation and some good-looking bats. It's not the best collection the Dodgers have produced, but it should be fun to watch.
