Player of the Day - Trayvon Robinson, OF

It hasn't been Tray's best month, but he's improved both his walk and strikeout rates, as well as clubbing his 4th HR in June. He now has 10 on the season, after collecting just 12 in the past 4 seasons combined. His SB success rate needs improvement and in spite of his freakishly high flyball BABIP, Robinson is succeeding in most aspects of his game.

Player of the Day - Tim Sexton, RHP

June wasn't the kindest month to Tim, but he closed it out with a bang. It was Sexton's second 8 inning outing of the year and his first in which he allowed just 1 earned run since May 22nd. What's impressed me the most this year are his command and ability to induce groundballs. He's walked just 15 batters in 83.2 innings and has a 2.08 ground/fly ratio. Tim definitely deserves a promotion, since he's arguably been the Dodgers' most consistent pitching prospect this season.

That Manny guy had a nice day as well, but Johnson pitched brilliantly en route to his 6th win of the season. His ERA this month is just over 2, in spite of a nasty outing on the 16th when he gave up 5 runs in 6.1 innings. Steven has shown flashes this spring of being a very real prospect and at 21, he still has time to develop.

A day before his 23rd birthday, Russell continues to do what he does best: hit for power and strike out. The big lefty is OPSing .976 this month but needs to prove himself at a higher level if he wants to be considered a prospect. Hopefully Kyle will be able to face some Double A pitching and at least hit for enough power to continue to justify his K rate.

Baylor's Aaron Miller signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday evening and will report Friday to the club's spring training facility in Glendale, Ariz.

After being drafted in the 14th round last season, Calfee struggled in the Pioneer league, striking out 72 times in 49 games. Repeating rookie ball is never a good thing, especially for someone who was signed out of college. Already 23, Clay has plenty of power potential in his 6'6 frame, but he's always going to have problems controlling his extra large strike zone.

The 17th round pick of the Dodgers in this year's draft, Ames had an impressive pro debut. The former Zag posted a 3.91 ERA this spring and his 8 wins tied for the team lead. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a scouting report on him but from his college stats, he looks like more of a control pitcher (106 Hits, 70 K's, 21 Walks in 96.2 IP) than a power guy.

Working 3 perfect innings with 6 strikeouts is a nice way to begin 2009, and hopefully Roberto can move into the starting rotation and into full season ball later this year.

I apologize for being a day late on covering the Arizona Rookie League, since I just assumed it would start tomorrow along with the Pioneer League. This award should count twice for Akins, who went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run yesterday. He's making up for lost time after not signing out of high school and he has a lot of promise with the bat. Hopefully he'll continue to rake and move quickly through the system.

He's still not walking enough and desperately needs to improve against righties, but he's doing better than he was last year.

Well, the scoreless innings streak ends at 20, but yet another strong performance from last year's 11th rounder. Nate would have picked up the win, too, if it hadn't been for Martin's implosion. Eovaldi is showing improved command of the strike zone, having allowed only 5 walks in his last 5 appearances. Hopefully he's making headway with his secondary offerings.

While Russell and Buss had great days at the plate, it was Aguasviva's continued dominance that gave him the edge. Geison was mentioned as a player to watch 2 years ago by Logan White, but last season was forgettable, as he posted a brutal 8.38 ERA in 8 games for the Loons last year before heading down to the Pioneer League and dominating. He got off to a late start this season, but made up for lost time by stringing together 4 outings without allowing an earned run. He's striking out almost a batter an inning, keeping his walks down and holding batters to a .167 average. In a rotation that already includes Ethan Martin, Nathan Eovaldi and Justin Miller, Aguasviva is providing Great Lakes with yet another young, talented pitcher.

Player of the Day - Steven Caseres, 1B

Caseres has been one of the hottest hitters in the minors this month. After batting .246 in April and .250 in May, Steven is hitting .438 with 5 HR in just 10 games. He still needs to cut down on the strikeouts and show he's capable of handling lefties, but it's nice to see him taking some steps forward.

State of the System

I figured I'd look back at my pre-season Top 10 prospect list and evaluate how the elite in the Dodgers' system have fared over the first few months of the season.

1. Andrew Lambo, OF

Lambo started '09 as he left off '08: hot. In April, Andrew batted .321/.383/.548 and seemed like he was a sure bet to make the big club sooner rather than later. However, May brought no flowers for him, as the month yielded some of his worst production as a pro (.223/.270/.320). While Lambo did club 7 doubles, he homered only once and struck out 26 times in 27 games.

I'm not sure if he's pressing or if pitchers have found a weakness or if he's just getting unlucky, though the latter seems to be true. Andrew's line drive percentage has been over 20% each month, yet his BABIP for May and June is .289 and .265, well below what it should be. He's also batting just .131 on groundballs, nearly .100 points lower than average. His groundball rate in May skyrocketed to 52.6% from 38.4% in April, which could mean he's trying to hit everything in the air and getting on top of the ball. Whatever it is, he still has plenty of time to figure things out. And since Lambo won't turn 21 until August, he's still young enough to overcome this type of under-performance.

2. James McDonald, RHP

As I predicted, J Mac broke camp with the big club and began the season as the Dodgers' #5 starter. However, his time in LA was short-lived as his usually reliable command evaded him and resulted in a 6.75 ERA with 16 walks in 18.2 innings. A trip to the bullpen preceded a plane ticket to Albuquerque and a return to Triple A.

Overall, McDonald's time as an Isotope has been well spent, as he's posted a 3.26 ERA in 6 starts with 40 K's, 14 walks and 2 HR in 30.1 innings. He's been especially hot over his last 2 appearances, surrendering just 1 earned run in 14 innings while striking out 23. Still just 24, James has plenty of time to make it back to LA and I expect him back with the club by September at the latest.

3. Ivan De Jesus, SS/2B

Ivan's season ended before it began, as a broken leg in spring training has sidelined the Puerto Rican infielder since March. He's expected to return after the all star break.

4. Ethan Martin, RHP

The 2008 first rounder's debut was delayed due to a knee injury, though it was worth the wait. The big righty has displayed an impressive fastball and promising secondary pitches, though he's still understandibly raw. Ethan is holding opposing batters to a .239 average and has 60 strikeouts in 53.2 innings. However, his problem is control, as evidenced by his 32 walks. He needs desparately to reduce the free passes, especially to left-handers.

5. Scott Elbert, LHP

It's hard to believe that Elbert has been a Dodger for 5 years, but he's still struggling to hang on with the big league club and doing his best to force his way back up. The 23 year old southpaw was far too hittable in his major league stint, allowing 10 hits (including 3 HR) in just 6.1 innings. Back in Double A, he's having more success, but Scott still needs to work on throwing more strikes. While he's starting in the minors, he's viewed as more of a relief type of pitcher in the majors.

6. Josh Lindblom, RHP

The biggest surprise from the 2008 draft, Josh was actually being considered for the 5th starter job in spring training. The Dodgers' prudence in returning him to the minors was the right choice, and though his numbers may not impress on the surface (3-4, 4.28), a deeper look reveals more production. Lindblom has struck out 40 batters in 48.1 innings, compared to just 8 walks and he's given up just 3 home runs. The Dodgers could use him on the big team this season, as a starter or a reliever and I'm under the impression that he'll reach the show by September at the latest.

7. Josh Bell, 3B

There seems to be an epidemic of bad luck in the Chattanooga locker room, as both Bell and Andrew Lambo should be putting up better numbers. In 50 June at bats, Bell is sporting a nifty 20% line drive rate, but his BABIP is only .216 for the month. Overall, his line of .271/.366/.453 is solid in spite of his ball-in-play numbers. He's tied for the team lead in home runs (7) and leads the team with 32 walks. If Josh's BABIP normalizes, he could be a valuable trading chip as the deadline nears.

8. Ramon Troncoso, RHP

A somewhat ambitious ranking on my part, there was talk of Troncoso being transitioned to a starting role coming into the year. However, he's turned into the Dodgers' best reliever not named Broxton. Ramon is no longer a prospect, but he's a very valuable setup man.

9. Austin Gallagher, 1B

My biggest miss, Gallagher actually moved down a level after last season's surprising assignment to High A. Now with Great Lakes, the 2007 3rd rounder is batting .267/.335/.361 with 3 home runs in 47 games. In spite of his massive frame, Austin's power hasn't yet developed. It seems as though he could have been suffering from an injury, as Gallagher missed about 2 weeks and returned to the lineup just 4 days ago. Still just 20, he has time to turn things around, but he'll need to start showing that he's capable of hitting for power sooner rather than later.

10.Justin Miller, RHP

I was very surprised to see Miller back in Great Lakes rotation to start 2009, though it's understandable given his excessive walk rate. The walks are down this year, though the strikeouts are as well and he's already given up 5 HR after yielding just 6 in 140 innings last season. Justin's still getting a ridiculous amount of groundballs (2.71 per flyout), and he's still just 21 in his second full season of pro ball.

Others of Note

-SS Dee Gordon earned rave reviews from scouts last year and is still flashing plus-plus speed (his 33 SB lead the league) along with promising defense. However, his offense is still developing and he needs to hone his on-base skills so he can fully exploit his baserunning ability.

-OF Kyle Russell is leading the Midwest League with 16 HR as well as 81 strikeouts. This doesn't bode well for Russell, who turns 23 in less than 2 weeks, as he will face better pitching as he moves up the latter.

-RHP Nathan Eovaldi made a name for himself late last year by hitting 96mph 20 times in his final start of the season. After struggling with his command and posting an ERA of over 6 through the first 2 months of 2009, Nate seems to have hit his stride as he's in the midst of a 17 inning scoreless streak.

-1B Steven Caseres has also come on of late, increasing his OPS from .837 in May to 1.314 in June. Caseres destroys righties, hitting .315/.399/.569 against them, but he really needs to show he can hit lefties (he's hitting just .136 against them) if he wants to be seen as more than a platoon player.

-OF Scott Van Slyke was one of the highest risers through the first 2 months of the season, though he's cooled off considerably in June. Hopefully Scott will show that April and May weren't flukes and he'll find his power stroke again.

-OF Trayvon Robinson was merely a speedster entering the year, a good athlete who was just learning to switch hit. He's now hitting over .300 as a lefty and he's nearly doubled his career home run total through the first 2 and a half months of the year. Tray is actually doing better in June than he did previously, increasing his walks, decreasing his strikeouts and hitting for even more power than before. He could find himself in Double A before long.

-RHP Tim Sexton has been another huge surprise, nearly halving his ERA in his second go round in the Cally League. While his strikeouts are merely acceptable (6.15 per 9), he's showing impeccable command and the ability to keep the ball in the stadium and on the ground. Sexton celebrated his 22nd birthday earlier this week and should celebrate a promotion to Double A in the near future.

-RHP Chris Withrow seemed like a forgotten man last year, as his 2008 debut was delayed because he sliced his hand open on a snorkel before suffering a sore shoulder. This year, he's healthy and throwing smoke. Chris' biggest problem is his lack of command against lefties; he's walked 22 of them this year. Improving his changeup will be integral in his ability to get lefties out. Like Nate Eovaldi, Withrow is riding a bit of a hot streak: over his last 5 starts, he's allowed just 5 earned runs while striking out 28 over 26.1 innings.

-RHP Steven Johnson has been a pleasant surprise this season, posting a 4.21 ERA (down nearly 3 runs from last year) with strikeout totals flirting with league-leading status. Steven's biggest problem is the longball, having given up 10 homers in 12 starts. Keeping the ball in the yard might actually be easier for Johnson once he moves up to Double A.

-LHP Victor Garate may be the answer to the Dodgers' LOOGY woes. Brent Leach is struggling to retire southpaws and Will Ohman had even less success. Garate's delivery is nearly identical to that of Brian Fuentes, though his stuff is a tick below that level.

That's all for now. If I left anyone out, please leave a comment and I'll do my best to respond as soon as I can.

That's two extremely strong starts in a row for J Mac, who still has a shot at starting in the bigs in spite of his wildness during his short-lived stint in the Dodgers' rotation. James has gone 7 innings in each of his last 2 starts, allowing just 1 earned run on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out a staggering 23 batters. A few more starts like these and he'll be back in LA in no time.

Mad props to Steven Randolph, Hyang-Nam Choi and Scott Strickland on combining for a 1 hit shutout. None are real prospects, though the 38 year old Choi has put up pretty good numbers (2.70 ERA, 25 K's and 4 BB in 16.1 innings). I doubt any of the 3 make it to LA this season but it's nice to see these vets having some success.

Player of the Day - James Adkins, LHP

Adkins had one of his best outings of the year today, though the game went to 14 innings and the Lookouts ended up losing. He's struggling with his control again this season, walking a batter every other inning and he has more walks than strikeouts. James oddly enough has reverse lefty/righty splits: righties are hitting .277 with 1 HR in 48 innings, while lefties are hitting .347 with 4 HR in 11.1 innings against him. The good news is his BABIP vs lefties is an astronomical .394 and should regress to the mean, as should his .308 BABIP on groundballs. So, while he does need to throw more strikes, he's also getting pretty unlucky.

MLB Draft - Day 2 Review

It didn't take long for the Dodgers to start nabbing hitters, as LA used its first 3 picks and 7 of its first 9 second day selections on position players. Here are some notable prospects:

Pick 5: Angelo Songco, OF (Loyola Marymount)

Scouting Report
: At 6'0 190 lbs, the lefty hitting Songco is big enough to be a power hitter and he showed that off last year in the Cape Cod league by placing second in the circuit with 8 home runs. He was one of the top college bats in California this spring, hitting .360/.481/.678. He's an average runner with adequate arm strength.

Analysis: He's a great value pick in the 4th and a better bet to hit than Blake Smith. There was talk earlier in the spring of Songco possibly being a first rounder. He'll probably move to LF with Smith in RF, but he profiles as a middle of the order masher.

Pick 6: JT Wise, C (U of Oklahoma)

Scouting Report
: After spending the first two years of his college career playing second and third for LSU, Wise went to Oklahoma and began catching as a junior. He put up modest offensive numbers as he was still adjusting to his new full time position, but broke out something fierce as a senior. He hit .359/.414/.665 with 17 HR and greatly improved his defense in 2009. He's a very good athlete for a catcher, with a strong arm and a quick release.

Analysis: Already 23, Wise doesn't have much time to develop in the minors and will have to move quickly. He'll need to prove this season wasn't a fluke and that he's capable of hitting well with good defense in pro ball. I'd start him at Ogden and skip him right up to Inland Empire; he should be able to hit well at both stops.

Pick 7: Jan Vazquez, C (PR HS)

Scouting Report
: Vazquez wasn't the biggest name to come out of Puerto Rico this spring but he certainly did the most to help his draft stock. He's a switch-hitter with good speed and athleticism, as well as great leadership ability and maturity. He earned MVP honors at the Excellence Games in May. He's a bit undersized at 5'10 160 lbs, but he has some bat speed and power potential.

Analysis: I like Vazquez more than Wise, mainly because he's 5 years younger but also because he seems to do everything well. He's the jack-of-all-trades, master of none type of player who will go overlooked by scouts because nothing really stands out but once he gets on the field, he produces. With Wise and Tony Delmonico ahead of him, Jan can take his time developing. I expect him to begin the year in the GCL.

Pick 20: Nick Akins, LF (Vanguard College)

Scouting Report
: Drafted 3 years ago by the Dodgers and last year by the Nationals, Akins has consistently shown great pro tools and rawness on the field. This season, he hit .314 with 13 home runs, but also struck out 37 times. Once seen as a shortstop, Nick now plays LF where he can show off his speed and plus arm strength.

Analysis: He was a much better prospect in 2006 when he was 18. Now 21, Akins may feel more compelled to sign a pro contract. Something the Dodgers have going for them is the fact that Nick lists Manny Ramirez as his sports hero. He has some holes in his game, but enough upside to warrant an over-slot bonus to get him into the system.

Pick 26: Richie Shaffer, SS (NC HS)

Scouting Report
: Shaffer was ranked as the 50th best draft prospect by Baseball America last November. But a month later, he'd break a hamate bone in his hand which would hamper his swing all year and eventually require surgery. When healthy, Richie would show off plus hit and power tools with adequate arm strength and speed.

Analysis: The hand injury will probably land Shaffer in Clemson and he could end up being a first round pick in 2012. It would be great if the Dodgers could sign him out of his college commitment, but McCourt has yet to show that he's willing to spend big bucks on late round picks. Hopefully, that trend will end this year.

Overall: A solid second day for the Dodgers. Songco should sign and come out swinging, while the two athletic backstops picked behind him offer some upside. If the Dodgers could sign Shaffer I'd be thrilled, though I don't expect it to happen. Be sure to check back tomorrow as I recap the draft's final day.

MLB Draft - Day 1 Review

And just like that, the first day of the 2009 draft has come and gone. A year of research and anticipation gives way to cautious optimism and Monday-morning quarterbacking. Let's take a look at who the Dodgers drafted.

Pick 1: Aaron Miller, LHP (Baylor)

Scouting Report: Seen as an outfielder coming out of high school and in his first 2 years of college ball, injuries decimated Baylor's pitching staff and forced Miller into the starting rotation. In spite of ugly numbers on the surface (5.12 ERA), his stuff took a big step forward. With a fastball that sits in the low 90s, touching 95, and the makings of a nasty slider, Aaron could have 2 plus pitches in his future repertoire. He needs to work on his command and develop his changeup, and while he's already 21, he's new to pitching full time and relatively very raw.

Analysis: At first, I wasn't impressed with the pick. Scouting publications are mixed on him: BA has him as the 21st best prospect in the draft, PGCC has him at 49 and Keith Law ranked him as #100. However, after reading more, I've become more optimistic about the pick. He reminds me of Scott Elbert: very athletic, 2 knockout pitches, command problems, strong build. He'll have the chance to start in the minors and develop a respectable changeup. If that doesn't happen, a relief role will probably be his ultimate destination.

Pick 2: Blake Smith, OF (Cal-Berkeley)

Scouting Report
: Also viewed as a pitching prospect, Smith has a plus-plus arm in RF and plenty of power potential. He does strikeout a lot (59 times in 53 games), so he'll need to work on shortening his swing in pro ball. Blake was relegated to DH duties after straining a lat muscle early in the season. The injury wasn't considered serious.

Analysis: I actually like him more as a pitching prospect, but apparently he blew the Dodgers away during a pre-draft workout, in which he hit a ball that nearly left the stadium. He's much like last year's 3rd round pick Kyle Russell, in that he'll walk, strikeout and homer a lot. And if his career as a hitter doesn't pan out, there's always that mid 90s fastball that could land him back on the mound.

Pick 3: Garrett Gould, RHP (Kansas HS)

Scouting Report: Gould burst onto the prospect scene this spring when his fastball jumped to the low 90s, touching 94mph. His curveball is regarded as one of the best in the class, something often found in Logan White draft picks. Garrett needs to work on his changeup and fine tune his delivery. While his arm works well, he often launches himself off to first base, which hinders his control and could pose potential injury risks down the road.

Analysis: Yes, I took Gould with my first pick in minorleaguebaseball.com's Mock Draft this past Saturday. I'm waiting on that job offer, Logan. Anywho, obviously I'm a fan of the pick and Gould has plenty of upside. He definitely needs to work on his direction to the plate and on developing his changeup.

Pick 4: Brett Wallach, RHP (Orange Coast JC)

Scouting Report
: The son of a former major leaguer (it seems like I say that every year), Wallach won Southern California JC Player of the Year honors this spring for his contributions at the plate and on the mound. A closer last season, Brett moved into the rotation and dominated. His fastball sits around 90 and he spots it well. He also throws a reliable slurvy slider and a changeup that is often his best pitch. He's athletic and projectable, with an easy delivery.

Analysis: Wallach shouldn't have a hard time moving through the lower minors, being able to throw 3 quality pitches for strikes. His fastball could become plus down the road as his 6'2 185 lbs frame fills out. While the Dodgers love them some arm-strength guys, Brett is a pitcher first who could develop plus velocity in the future. Even if his velocity doesn't improve, he could reach the majors as a back end starter.

Overall: The draft is heavy on pitching and the Dodgers took advantage. It's the first time in Logan White's tenure that he's used his first 2 picks on college players. Miller and Smith are raw with plenty of upside, while Gould has the plus curve and Wallach the plus changeup. It'll be interesting to see how the Dodgers begin tomorrow's activities, and whether they continue the pitching trend or turn their focus to position players. A few prep hitters I really like and hope to see drafted by LA are SS/2B David Nick and C Josh Leyland.

Player of the Day - Jaime Pedroza, 2B

Congrats to Mr Pedroza for the first cycle of the season. He's killing righties this season, hitting .326/.409/.535 against them as opposed to .200/.306/.450 against southpaws. I don't expect him to be in Low A much longer.

Player of the Day - Kyle Russell, OF

Another day, another walk, another strikeout, another home run. Russell leads the league in home runs and is second in SLG. He's also second in strikeouts. Inland Empire's outfield is a little crowded, so I wouldn't be shocked to see Russell skipped to Double A Chattanooga within the month.

Player of the Day - Trayvon Robinson, OF

Tray misses the cycle by a homer. He's hitting .349 on the road this season, compared to .266 in the Empire. After drawing just 5 walks in April and 8 in May, Robinson has already received 4 free passes in 3 June games. The strikeouts have no where to go but down after whiffing an insane 42 times last month. As little as I believe in the numbers of Tray, Mattingly and Van Slyke, they continue to put them up and I gotta give em props for that.

Player of the Day - Preston Mattingly, LF

After an incredibly hot month of May (.345/.393/.545), Preston starts June with a bang. He's homered 3 times in his last 9 games, going 13 for 34 (.382) over that span. He's also destroying lefties, hitting a robust .462 with an 1.128 OPS through the first 2 months. The plate discipline still needs a lot of work, but at least the numbers are good.
