Minor League Recap - 5/01/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 5-2

Tony Abreu - 1 for 5
James Loney - 0 for 4, BB
Matt Kemp - 0 for 3, K, HBP, OF Assist
Andy LaRoche - 0 for 3, BB, K

Greg Miller - 3 IP, Hit, 2 R (1 ER), 6 BB, 4 K's

Another erratic outing from Miller, who's had major control inssues over his past few starts. He walked 2 to begin the 4th and was subsequently pulled. He made 77 pitches, only 36 of which were strikes. Hopefully he'll make some mechanical adjustments and get back on track. Abreu's hitting .337, while the other big names went hitless and are all now hitting under .270. Vegas continues their series with Sacramento tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 8-4

Chin Lung Hu - 2 for 5, R, SB
Xavier Paul - 1 for 4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB

Zach Hammes - 2 IP, Hit, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

Another offensive outpouring from the Suns. Hu raised his average back up to .340, adding his 4th stolen base of the season. Xavier Paul hit his 3rd HR in the past 4 games. Raglani hasnt been hitting but he sure has been walking, drawing at least 1 free pass in 9 of the last 10 games. Oddly enough, Raglani's OPS vs lefties is over .300 points higher than his OPS vs righties. And there was a Zach Hammes sighting! In his season debut, Hammes was sharp, and it'll be tough on opponents seeing him and Jon Meloan in the back of the Suns' bullpen. After taking the series finale and the series from Montgomery, Jax travels to Carolina to start a new 5 game set starting tomorrow at 4:15pm.

High A - Inland Empire lost 5-3

Ivan De Jesus Jr - 0 for 3, BB, K
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4, R
Lucas May - 0 for 2, R, BB, HBP, CS
Travis Denker - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, R, K
Russell Mitchell - 0 for 4, 3 K's
Jamie Hoffman - 2 for 4, RBI, SB

The 66ers tried to make a comeback, scoring 3 in the 9th, but ultimately fell short. Hoffman, in his 2nd game back from a week off (Probably due to injury), raised his average to .324 and stole his 4th base. May and Mitchell have seen their averages drop lately, with May hitting .327 and Mitchell hitting .293. Denker hit his 3rd double and raised his average to .319. De Jesus Jr is really struggling, hitting .235. Brent Leach walked a pair but worked a scoreless 8th and lowered his ERA to 0.54. IE continues with Lake Elsinore tomorrow at 3:07pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 4-2

Trayvon Robinson - 0 for 4, 3 K's
Preston Mattingly - 0 for 4, K, E
David Sutherland - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 2, BB, K
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, K, PB

A brilliant outing from Francisco Felix was wasted as the Loons' bullpen gave up 4 runs in the 8th inning. Felix, who worked 6 innings of 1 hit ball while allowing a walk and striking out 5, lowered his ERA to 0.36. He also increased his strikeout to walk ratio to 28:4. He's only allowed 1 ER in 24.2 innings. Even though he's not really a prospect, those are some impressive numbers. All the hitters are struggling, but what else is new? Mattingly committed his 12th error in his 17th game. I think it would be wise to just bite the bullet and move him to the OF already. And it's not simply because he's struggling, it's because there's no reason to believe he'll get significantly better. Justin Fuller hit a Solo HR, his first of the season. The other run was scored when Eduardo Perez walked and Sutherland doubled him in during the 7th. Just like the big club, Great Lakes plays an early game tomorrow at 9am.
