Minor League Recap - 5/24/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 5-3

James Loney - 1 for 3, BB, K
Matt Kemp - 2 for 3, RBI, R, BB, K, SB

DJ Houlton's gem was spoiled as the bullpen allowed 5 runs in the 8th and Vegas dropped the series finale. Houlton spun 6 scoreless, scattering 5 hits while striking out half a dozen. The offense gave him 2 runs in the 1st and added another in the top of the 8th before the pen imploded. Houlton allowed back to back singles in the 7th before being relieved by Matt White. But the scoring chance was spoiled when a bunt attempt forced the runner out at 3rd and a double play ended the inning. But White struggled in the 8th, allowing back to back singles before being replaced by Eric Hull. A wild pitch was followed by 3 straight singles and an intentional walk to load the bases. With the score tied 3-3, Hull struck out the next batter for the 1st out of the inning before being replaced by Matt Riley. But a possible double play ball was thrown away by Luis Maza, leading to the game-winning runs. The action returns to Sin City as the 51's host Portland tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 3-2

Josh Bell - 2 for 3, R, BB
Preston Mattingly - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, R, K
Kenley Jansen - 1 for 3, BB

Clayton Kershaw - 4 IP, 3 Hits, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 7 K's

Kershaw had an early exit on the way to his 2nd loss of the season. Kershaw started strong but struggled in the 3rd and 4th innings. In the 3rd, he allowed a single between a flyout and a strikeout. But a passed ball, a groundball and a fielding error by Clayton led to a run. He then walked the bases loaded and struck out the last batter. In the 4th, a leadoff single was followed by 2 strikeouts. A stolen base and an error sent the runner to 3rd and he promptly stole home. A walk was followed by a groundout and Kershaw's day was done. The walk total is concerning, but listening to the announcer gives some credence to Kershaw's supposed control issues as Clayton isnt missing by much and may be getting squeezed on occasion. The Loons tried to mount a comeback, as Josh Bell's leadoff single in the 9th was cashed in by Preston Mattingly's 4th double and P Mat scored on a sac fly. Jansen raised his average over .100 and drew his 7th walk. Great Lakes plays a brief 2 game series in Lansing starting tomorrow at 4:05pm.
