Minor League Recap - 5/02/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 8-7

Tony Abreu - 4 for 7, RBI, R
James Loney - 1 for 3, RBI, R, 3 BB
Matt Kemp - 3 for 6, 3B, 2 RBI, R, K, SB
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 6, RBI, R, K, E

Hong Chih Kuo - 2.1 IP, 2 Hits, 0 R, BB, 7 K's
Yhency Brazoban - 1 IP, 2 Hits, ER, 0 BB, 2 K's

Hong Chih Kuo made his 2nd appearance in Vegas on his rehab stint and was impressive, recording all his outs via the strikeout. He was on a strict pitch count (I'm guessing 50ish) so he left in the 3rd inning. The 51's had already scored twice in the first inning and added another in the 3rd. But Sacramento scored a trio in the 5th to tie and added 1 more in the 6th to take the lead. After a scoreless 7th, the Rivercats added a pair in the 8th to take a 6-3 lead. But in the bottom of the 8th, Andy LaRoche started off the inning by reaching on an error. After Choo Freeman popped out and Kelly Stinnett walked, Tomas Perez singled in LaRoche to pull Vegas within 2. Then Tony Abreu singled to load the bases and was forced at 2nd on an RBI groundout by Larry Bigbie. A James Loney single tied the game and Matt Kemp singled to give the 51's the lead. However, in the bottom of the 9th, Yhency Brazoban gave up a 2 out RBI double to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th, a 2 out double from Tomas Perez was cashed in as Tony Abreu collected his 4th hit, a game-winning single. Abreu's performance raised his average to .353, while Kemp's 3 hit effort (Including his 2nd triple) bumped him up to .312. LV concludes their series with Sacramento tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville lost 3-2

Cory Dunlap - 3 for 4, R
Anthony Raglani - 0 for 4, K

Justin Orenduff - 3.1 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, BB, 4 K's

Cory Dunlap had himself a nice day, but he and Marshall McDougall werent enough to keep the Suns ahead. Jacksonville scored twice in the 2nd inning, but Carolina even the game up with a pair in the 4th. Orenduff allowed just 1 baserunner in his first 3 innings of work, but allowed 2 doubles and a single in the 4th. The game was tied until the bottom of the 9th, when a 1 out walk was followed by Xavier Paul's first error of the season that put runners on 1st and 2nd. Reliever BJ LaMura then walked the bases loaded and allowed a game winning single. Anthony Raglani's batting average is now down to .250, though he's still among the league leaders in OPS. Hu's hitless effort lowered his average to .330. Paul's average dropped to .281. The Suns look to even up the series in game 2, tomorrow at 4:15pm.

Jamie Hoffman gets Player of the Game honors, not only for his pair of doubles but also for throwing out 2 runners at home. Coincidentally, he was thrown out at home. The only starter who didnt collect a hit for the Empire was David Nicholson, who was DH'ing. Low A - Great Lakes lost 13-6

Preston Mattingly - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, K, CS
David Sutherland - 2 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 3, CS, HBP

The Loons fell behind in the 2nd inning when starter Cody White allowed 2 runs. They came back and pulled ahead in the 4th, when Matt Berezay hit a bases clearing double. Berezay went 2 for 2 with a 2B and 3 walks. But the pitching fell apart in the 5th. White allowed the tying run and left the game with 2 outs and 2 runners on base. Reliever Doug Brooks came in and proceded to allow 7 consecutive hits, allowing 8 runners to score (2 of which were inherited). Miguel Sanfler came in and recorded the final out, but not before Quad Cities sent 14 batters to the plate. Sanfler was decent in his 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just an unearned run on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out a pair. Mattingly doubled his walk total for the season but lowered his batting average to .200. Bell's average dropped to .203, while Santana raised his average to .135. He also allowed his 6th passed ball.
