Minor League Recap - 5/10/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 17-16

Tony Abreu - 3 for 5, RBI, 2 R, BB, K, SB
Matt Kemp - 1 for 5, HR (3), RBI, 2 R, BB, K, E
James Loney - 2 for 6, K

A very exciting game that finished in 10 innings, it was a back and forth battle that came down to the wire. The 51's gave up the lead in the top of the 9th, allowing 4 runs that put Vegas down by 1 heading into the bottom of the 9th. But a leadoff double by Ken Huckaby was cashed in on a sacrifice bunt and a Tony Abreu single to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Spike Lundberg allowed a leadoff single but got the next two batters. But a hit batter was followed by a 2 out 3 run HR by Ramon Vasquez to give Oklahoma the lead. In the bottom of the 10th, Mitch Jones and Delwyn Young walked to bring the tying run to the plate in the person of Larry Bigbie. Bigbie walked to load the bases which brought up Sergio Garcia. A grounder to shortstop seemed to be a tailor-made double play ball, but the second baseman threw the ball away which scored both Jones and Young. The next batter was Kelly Stinnett, who replaced Huckaby an inning earlier, and Stinnett sent a ball over the left field wall to give the 51's a dramatic win. Abreu's 3 hit game raised his average to .360. Kemp hit his 3rd homer over the year. Loney's average was lifted to .261. Vegas concludes their series with Oklahoma tomorrow at 7:11pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 12-11

Chin Lung Hu - 0 for 4, RBI, 2 K's
Xavier Paul - 3 for 4, 3B, RBI, 3 R, BB, SB
Anthony Raglani - 1 for 4, R, BB

Mike Megrew - 4 IP, 5 Hits, 3 R (2 ER), BB, 4 K's

Another slugfest ended with a game-winning homerun, though this time it came in the 8th inning. Megrew pitched ok, and was relieved by Brian Akin who allowed 6 ER in 1.2 innings. He's allowed 11 ER in his last 4.1 innings. The Suns were holding on to a 9-9 tie at that point, until Wesley Wright relieved Akin and allowed 2 runs of his own. Heading into the bottom of the 8th, the Suns were down 11-9 before Juan Gonzalez reached on an error and Xavier Paul singled. John Lindsey followed with his team leading 8th HR to give the Suns a 1 run lead heading into the 9th. Recently demoted southpaw Luis Gonzalez allowed a walk and a single to put the tying and go ahead runs on base, but after a sacrifice bunt, Gonzalez induced an infield popup and struck the last batter out to secure the win. Closer Jon Meloan wasnt going to be used after closing out the previous two games. Paul smacked his 2nd triple of the year, stole his 5th base and is now hitting .299. Hu went hitless for the 2nd time in the past 3 games. Raglani has reached base safely in 9 of his last 10. Jacksonville ends their homestand tomorrow with Birmingham at 4:05pm.

Travis Denker - 3 for 4, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, K

Javy Guerra - 5.1 IP, 7 Hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's

Guerra's 2 walks was his lowest total in any appearance this season, an encouraging sign as he seems to be harnessing his stuff while recovering from injury. Brent Leach pitched a perfect 9th, lowering his ERA to 0.46. Denker hit his 5th double of the season and is hitting .343/.407/.457 through 20 games. May's average his hovering dangerously close to .300 but he did manage to collect his 10th double of the year. DeWitt hit double #9 but also committed error #5. Jamie Hoffman has cooled off, going just 1 for his last 12. Ivan De Jesus Jr got the night off. The Empire heads to Visalia for a 3 game set starting tomorrow night at 7pm.
