Minor League Recap - 5/13/07

Triple A - Las Vegas lost 10-3

Matt Kemp - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI
James Loney - 0 for 4, 2 K's

Hong Chih Kuo - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

The 51's were shut down by Mets' prospect Phil Humber, who allowed just 1 ER over 7 innings. That run was scored by Spike Lundberg, a relief pitcher, when his double was picked up by Matt Kemp's 8th of the year. Loney's average is down to .254 and he's hitting just .229 in his last 10 games. Kuo made his 2nd appearance in 3 nights, lowering his ERA to 3.18 and raising his strikeout total to 19 in 11.1 innings. It appears that the Dodgers' brass feels the only way he'll make it to the bigs is in a relief role, so I assume they're grooming him as such. The series with New Orleans continues tomorrow at 7:11pm.

The Suns continued a rained out game in the first contest, where they already had established a 2-0 advantage in the 2nd inning. The scoring continued, as the Suns added 4 more runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead. But after Giuseppe Norrito tossed 5 shutout innings, the bullpen let Jax down. Mark Alexander, recently demoted from Triple A, allowed 4 ER in 1.1 innings of work to cut the lead to 6-4. With 1 out in the 8th, Jon Meloan relieved Alexander and recorded the next 2 outs without further damage. Then in the bottom of the 9th, after allowing a leadoff double, Meloan struck out the next 2 batters and the Suns were 1 out away from the win. But after allowing another double and a walk, Meloan gave up a walk-off HR to Mark Reynolds, blowing his 2nd save and earning his 2nd loss of the season. The 2nd game went much smoother, as Jacksonville scored 2 runs in the first to take an early lead. They added single runs in the 3rd and the 6th as insurance. Starter Eric Cyr allowed just 2 runs over 6 innings and Luis Gonzalez, also recently demoted from Vegas, came in for the save. Dunlap returned from his week long suspension and collected his 3rd double of the season. He and Hu did not play in the 2nd game. Paul collected a pair of hits and a pair of walks, while Raglani drew 2 free passes in Game 1 and clubbed doubles #9 and #10 in Game 2. Raglani may be very attractive to more sabermetrically inclined teams and, if his performance continues, may be trade bait at the deadline. The Suns stay in Mobile 2 more nights, playing tomorrow at 4:05pm.

High A - Inland Empire won 7-0

Jamie Hoffman - 2 for 5, 3B, RBI
Lucas May - 0 for 5, CS
Russell Mitchell - 3 for 4, 2B, HR (3), RBI, 2 R
Blake DeWitt - 0 for 4
Travis Denker - 2 for 4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 R, SB

Jesus Castillo - 7 IP, 5 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's

Jesus Castillo had his best outing by far the season in the 66ers rout of Visalia. Castillo, who struggled in his last start, earned his 2nd victory of the season and worked his longest appearance this year while lowering his ERA to 4.08. Denker and Mitchell each hit their 3rd HR of the season. Mitchell was a triple shy of the cycle, while also smacking his 14th double and reaching base safely for the 9th time in his last 10 games. Denker raised his line to .361/.421/.530 and also stole his 1st base. Hoffman hit his 2nd triple and is batting .327. May and DeWitt went hitless, with DeWitt's average falling to .213. The Empire returns home for a 4 game series with Stockton, starting tomorrow at 7:05pm.

Low A - Great Lakes lost 12-5

David Sutherland - 0 for 4
Josh Bell - 3 for 4, 2B, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R
Scott Van Slyke - 0 for 3, R, BB
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, RBI

Clayton Kershaw - 1.1 IP, 5 Hits, 7 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's
Miguel Sanfler - 2 IP, 2 Hits, ER, BB, 4 K's

Clayton Kershaw had the worst outing of his career, leading to the Loons' demise. Kershaw, who had allowed just 5 ER in his first 6 outings, more than doubled his ERA today as it rose to 3.38. Kershaw also struggled early in his last start, and he had struggled with a minor injury, but I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. The bats tried to pick him up, scoring 3 times in the 2nd and 2 more in the 3rd to cut the deficit to 1, but 4 more West Michigan runs in the 4th was too much to overcome. Josh Bell, like Russell Mitchell, came a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. However, he accounted for 3 of the Loons' 5 hits. Preston Mattingly and Trayvon Robinson did not play. Great Lakes returns home for 2 more with West Michigan, beginning tomorrow at 4pm.
