Minor League Recap - 4/16/07

Triple A - Las Vegas won 2-1

Tony Abreu - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
James Loney - 0 for 3, IBB, OF Assist
Andy LaRoche - 1 for 4, HR (1), 2 RBI
Delwyn Young - 0 for 4, 3 K's

A pitcher's duel in the PCL? Eric Stults had a nice outing, allowing just the one run over 7 innings. Eric Hull walked one and struck out one in the 8th, with Tsao striking out 2 in a perfect 9th for the save. Abreu led off the bottom of the first with a single and LaRoche homered 2 outs later, putting the 51's ahead for good. Young struggled, though he's still hitting .300. Loney was walked intentionally, though he hasnt done much this season to deserve that type of treatment. Vegas starts a 4 game homestand with Colorado Springs tomorrow night at 7pm.

Double A - Jacksonville won 5-3

Chin Lung Hu - 0 for 6
Xavier Paul - 1 for 6, R, K
Anthony Raglani - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Dunlap - 0 for 1, K

Scott Elbert - 3 IP, 2 Hits, 3 ER, 7 BB, 6 K's
Justin Orenduff - 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's
Jon Meloan - 1 IP, 0 Hits, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's

Elbert really struggled, having trouble finding the strike zone from the very start when he walked the leadoff man on 4 pitches. Previously, he had allowed just 3 walks in 12 innings. Last season, the major knock on him was control. Hopefully this start was an outlier for an otherwise accurate season. Props to the bullpen for pitching 11 scoreless innings. The game went to the 14th tied 3-3, until John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall hit back to back homers to put the Suns ahead 5-3. Jon Meloan came in to close it out and struck out 2, giving him 12 strikeouts (And no walks) in 7 innings this season. Somewhere in there, Justin Orenduff went 2 hitless and Carlos Alvarez went 2 scoreless. Raglani had 2 hits, Paul had 1 and Hu was hitless. Dunlap came in to pinch hit and struck out. Jacksonville faces Huntsville again tomorrow at 5pm.

High A - Inland Empire had the day off

Low A - Great Lakes lost 5-4

Trayvon Robinson - 1 for 4, R, BB, K
Preston Mattingly - 2 for 4, 2B, E
Josh Bell - 0 for 4, 2 K's, E
Scott Van Slyke - 1 for 4, RBI
Kenley Jansen - 0 for 3, BB, K

The Loons made a late run, scoring 2 in the 9th, but came up just short. Mattingly almost doubled his batting average, though he's still hitting .160 and committed his 3rd error of the season. Speaking of errors, Josh Bell is up to 6 miscues and 8 strikeouts, compared to just 4 hits. Both are obviously struggling. Tray collected another single; all of his hits this season have been singles. Kenley Jansen has yet to get a single hit, while Van Slyke is still under the Mendoza line. There are some teams in the Midwest League (The Loons included) that are hitting under .200. Francisco Felix started, though it was Josh Wall's turn in the rotation. Felix allowed 3 runs, one of which was earned, in 4 innings. His ERA is still under 1. Jesus Rodriguez allowed 2 earned in 3, while Garrett White allowed a hit and struck out the side in the 8th. The Loons start a series against the Peoria Chiefs, managed by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, starting tomorrow at 4pm.
