Minor League Review

The minor league season is a little more than a third over, so it seems like a good time to take a look and see how some noteworthy prospects are doing.

Triple A - Albuquerque

The Dodgers are holding their own in their new Triple A affiliate, playing .500 ball and surprisingly finding themselves in first place. The club is 5th in the circuit in runs scored, but in the bottom half in runs allowed despite having the oldest staff in the PCL. As for the prospects, the pitching staff is barren, so the hitters are the only ones who provide some potential value.

Xavier Paul, OF - The 24 year old hit .408 in April, struggled through 5 games in May before making his major league debut on the 7th to replace suspended OF Manny Ramirez. After playing in 7 games, Paul contracted a staph infection that landed him in the hospital and on the DL.

Jamie Hoffman, OF
- Paul's illness prompted the recently promoted Hoffman to replace him on the major league roster. Jamie did very well in Double A Chattanooga, batting .307 and drawing more walks (22) than strikeouts (18). After his promoted to Triple A, he continued getting on base and even slugged a pair of home runs. He profiles as a 4th outfielder type, though he's done well in limited starts at the big league level.

Chin Lung Hu, SS - After struggling in the majors last year, Hu goes back to Triple A to start 2009. His hitting woes continue, as he's batting just .227 through the first 44 games of the season. Going just 4 for 35 against southpaws certainly doesn't help matters, nor does his .234 BABIP. Chin is getting really unlucky right now, so his numbers should improve going forward. With Furcal locked in through 2011, Hu seems like a prime candidate to be traded for pitching help this season.

Blake DeWitt, 3B - I was pushing for DeWitt to get the starting 3B job last offseason, but the Dodgers saw fit to re-sign Casey Blake. While the move looks good now, I think DeWitt would have been the right choice over the next 3 years. He displayed exceptional defense while in the majors last year and has shown improved hitting skills in Triple A this season. I know, I know, the PCL is a hitter's dream, but Blake is walking more (19) than he's striking out (12). He's even hitting lefties. Like Hu, he seems destined to realize his potential with another organizationa.

Double A - Chattanooga

Another new affiliate, this time with plenty of prospects. However, the results have been drastically different, as the Lookouts are 10 games under .500 and in last place in their division.

Andrew Lambo, LF - After a spectacular opening month, Lambo has come plummeting back to earth. For the month of May, Lambo batted just .223 with only 1 home run. His strikeout rate skyrocketed along with his groundball rate. He's still sitting at a 20% line drive rate, but only 15% of his groundballs are going for hits. Once that number normalizes, expect his stats to climb back up to respectable levels. I still see Andrew as Manny's eventual replacement.

Josh Lindblom, RHP - On the surface, Lindblom's season looks like a disappointment (2-3, 4.78 ERA). But looking deeper, Josh has pitched very well. He's struck out nearly a batter an inning (33 in 37.2 IP), walked just 7 in that span and allowed only 2 home runs. I expect to see Lindblom in the majors some time this season, though I'm not sure if he'd be starting or relieving.

Josh Bell, 3B - Bell seems to have grown as a hitter, even after missing considerably time last season. The 22 year old switch-hitter hasn't put up the HR numbers I expected (just 4 longballs in 46 games), but he's clubbed 13 doubles and drawn an outstanding 27 walks. His strikeouts are a little high, especially given the dearth of home runs, but if the power does come back, Josh could establish himself as a hell of a prospect.

Scott Elbert, LHP - The Dodgers gave Scott a chance to keep a major league job and Scott blew it. It's that simple. Now it's up to him to show he's ready for another chance. So far, the results have been pretty good, except for one outing. In his last start, Elbert took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. But the appearance before that, Scott gave up 8 earned runs in 3.1 innings. He's still got plenty of fastball and a strong curve, but it's up in the air whether his future lies in the rotation or the pen.

Tony Abreu, 2B - Remember him? He's still around and he's still hitting. The 24 year old is batting .297 in 19 games, though he's only drawn one walk and collected 5 extra basehits. There's still an outside chance that he could catch on somewhere as a starting second baseman, though it's not likely to be with the Dodgers.

High A - Inland Empire

Beware, ye pitchers who enter here. Along with the PCL, the California League is a hitter's heaven. Thin, dry air and warm temperatures keep balls airborne far longer than gravity intended. The 66ers are 6 games under .500; that seems like some sort of message...

Scott Van Slyke, OF - Possibly the biggest surprise of the season thus far has been the development of the young Van Slyke, who came into the year with a career batting average of about .250. Right now, he's hitting .313/.372/.544 with 7 HR (more than he had in his first 3 seasons of pro ball combined). I was sure he'd snap out of it after an impressive month of April, but he's only improved in all facets of his game; he's walking more, striking out less and still hitting for gap and homer power. His 17 doubles rank 3rd in the Cali League. I'm cautiously pessimistc in regards to how much he's actually grown as a hitter. If he gets promoted to Double A and keeps on hitting, then I'll be a believer.

Tim Sexton, RHP - The 2007 25th rounder finds himself back in High A after struggling to a 6.04 ERA there last season. This year, he's had far more success, posting a 2.79 mark in 9 contests with a 2:1 ground/fly ratio and only 4 home runs surrendered. Tim will turn 22 next month, so a callup to Chattanooga seems like it could happen sooner rather than later.

Trayvon Robinson, OF - Coming into the season, I regarded Tray as a raw speedster who had a lot to learn about the pro game. It appears that he has less to learn now, though there's a ways to go in his development. Power wasn't really a part of his game up until this year, as he's clubbed 6 HR in his first 49 games. He's stealing plenty of bases (19), though his success rate should be higher than 70%. Unfortunately, his walk rate has regressed and his strikeout rate has climbed to about once every 4 at bats. I doubt he'd be able to hang with Double A pitching, but he's still young enough to take that next step in his development.

Chris Withrow, RHP - After being selected 20th overall in 2007, Withrow's first two pro seasons were less than inspiring as he pitched only 13 innings over that span. This year, he's made 6 starts and nearly tripled his career workload. The results have been mixed; he's struggling mightily with control and has walked about 4.5 per 9, leading to a bloated 5.65 ERA. On the other hand, he's struck out 50 batters (12.27 per 9) and allowed only 3 HR. As he continues to develop, Chris will need to hone his changeup in order to keep lefties in check. Unless he begins a Hershiser scoreless streak, I expect he'll spend the rest of the year in San Bernardino.

Preston Mattingly, LF - It's interesting that the Dodgers have the sons of 2 former all stars in their High A outfield. Both are big time athletes with big time questions about their game. Preston hasn't had as much success as Van Slyke, though the numbers are somewhat impressive. Coming into Sunday's game, Mattingly had drawn just one walk the entire season. He's also struck out 45 times in 30 games. So don't let the .303 batting average get you too excited. He still has a long way to go to have a shot at reaching the show.

Steven Johnson, RHP - It would figure that the day I do my first minor league review is the day Johnson has his worst outing of the year. Still just 21 years old, Steven was putting up some impressive numbers before seeing his ERA rise over a run. He still leads the league in strikeouts with 61 and his 21 walks are okay. Johnson's problem has been home runs; he's surrendered 9 of them in 10 starts. Oddly enough, it's right-handed hitters that are giving him problems; he's held lefties to a .227 average. If he can figure out why that is, he could take off.

Pedro Baez, 3B - Yet another raw athlete with big time tools, Pedro is a power/power guy at the hot corner who profiles as a slick defender with a cannon for an arm and plenty of pop at the plate. However, in order to utilize his offensive ability, he'll need to cut down on the whiffs. Baez already has 41 K's in 37 games, compared to just 9 walks. Plate discipline will be the key for him to advance to Double A and have any amount of success.

Low A - Great Lakes

"A loon is a loon, I suppose." - Clayon Kershaw

Dee Gordon, SS - The son of Flash has excited scouts with his raw tools. He's close to an 80 runner on the 20-80 scale. Most believe he'll be able to field the position well as he matures. He has raw contact ability and can drive the ball from time to time. With Gordon, it's all about the fine-tuning. He needs to walk a litle more and strikeout a little less; cut down on the errors. When all is said and done, he could replace Rafael Furcal as the Dodgers' shortstop of the future in 2012.

Ethan Martin, RHP - The 2008 first rounder breezed through the first month of the season, allowing just 3 runs on 12 hits in 20 innings while striking out 26. May hasn't been so easy, as Martin has struggled greatly with his control, leading to 25 walks in 40.2 innings. He's still striking guys out (11.28 per 9) and has only allowed 1 home run, but Ethan needs to improve his control and command of all his pitches.

Tony Delmonico, C - Tony has caught less than I thought he would this spring, having logged only 23 of his 49 games at the position. His bat has been somewhat inconsistent; he flashes power and on base ability but goes long stretches without home runs and is prone to striking out. I'm willing to give Delmonico a pass this year since he's adjusting to a new position, so hopefully he can address these issues in 2010.

Justin Miller, RHP - A personal favorite of mine, I was expecting Miller to be promoted to High A after a successful showing with the Loons in 2008. Apparently, the Dodgers had other plans. After issuing 4.8 walks per 9 last season, Justin has cut that nearly in half this year. However, his strikeout and home run rates have gotten worse and his ERA is about half a run higher. The 21 year old is still showing a dominant sinker, which has led to a 3.23:1 ground/fly ratio. If he can find that balance between missing the strike zone and missing bats, Justin could be a solid pitcher down the road.

Kyle Russell, OF - The very definition of a TTO (Three True Outcome) hitter: he's going to walk, strikeout and hit homers. Those outcomes have accounted for nearly half his plate appearances this season. Russell is tied for the league lead with 13 HR and he's third in strikeouts (61). The latter stat is a concern for me, since he's facing Low A pitching. Unless he cuts down on the K's, I doubt he makes it to the show.

Nathan Eovaldi, RHP - A late season showing with the Raptors in 2008 put Eovaldi in the Dodgers' Top 10 prospects list for Baseball America, after showing a mid 90s fastball and touching 96 twenty times. Nate's last start was the first in which he didn't allow an earned run and he's given up 3 or more in 5 of his 9 appearances. The strikeouts aren't where I thought they'd be (6.4 per 9), though the walks aren't horrible and he's allowed only 1 HR. Eovaldi's going to need a lot of time to develop, so don't give up on him just yet.

Austin Gallagher, 1B - Gallagher would definitely earn my "Biggest Disappointment" award, given that he's regressed so much after being demoted. After holding his own as a 19 year old in High A, Austin is now struggling to hit as a 20 year old in Low A. I'd expect much more than a .676 OPS from a slugging first baseman. His BABP is a tad bit low and he is walking enough, but the power needs to start showing up.

That it for the review. If you have any questions about any prospects I didn't mention, feel free to comment. Next up is my review of the big league squad.

Player of the Day - Scott Van Slyke, OF

Scott apparently got that memo I sent him about drawing walks. He's recieved 4 free passes in his last 2 games and is still managing to hit for power. This is a tremendously good sign for his development. If he can keep up this level of production through June, I think he'll find himself in Chattanooga come July.

FYPD Preview

The draft is just over a week away (June 9-11) and will be airing on MLB TV (damn you Dish Network!!!). For the second time in the 8 years that Logan White has been running the show, the Dodgers will not have a first round pick. The last time that happened, the Dodgers selected Luke Hochevar, whose refusal to sign ended up allowing the Dodgers to take Clayton Kershaw the following year. If you haven't followed the draft process closely, I'll highlight a few things that should be looked for come draft day:

Rule #1: Bet on a prep arm

In Logan White's 7 drafts, he's selected a high school pitcher with his first pick 5 times. The two exceptions are Hochevar in 2005 and James Loney, who many projected as a pitcher, in 2002. Even in '05, White said he was looking at pitcher Beau Jones (who came off the board the very next pick), out of a Louisianna high school. Names like Chad Billingsley ('03) and Clayton Kershaw ('06) are recognizable to most Dodger fans, but how are the others doing?

Scott Elbert ('04): 3.63 ERA, 39.2 IP, 38 Hits, 4 HR, 18 BB, 49 K's in AA

Chris Withrow ('07): 5.65 ERA, 36.2 IP, 32 Hits, 3 HR, 18 BB, 50 K's in High A

Ethan Martin ('08): 3.76 ERA, 40.2 IP, 34 Hits, 1 HR, 25 BB, 51 K's in Low A

What do they have in common? All are arm strength guys with high release points, plus fastballs and good curveballs. All are 6'1-6'3 (and I realize I'm probably being generous by listing Billingsley as 6'1). All are good athletes (Elbert was a HS running back, Martin was considered a 3B until the year he was drafted).

Where do they come from? Billingsley hails from Ohio, Elbert from Missouri, Kershaw and Withrow from Texas and Martin from Georgia. White will take local kids from time to time (Greg Miller in 2002, Michael Watt in 2007), but doesn't go out of his way to draft by proximity.

Rule #2: Don't believe the rankings

Nearly every year, White will pick a kid earlier than where he's exptected to be drafted. In 2008, it was Dee Gordon (who wasn't on most scouting publications' radars). In 2007, it was Watt. In 2006, it was Preston Mattingly. In 2005, it was Ivan DeJesus. Obviously, some of those picks have paid off while others are forgettable. The bottom line is, if Logan like, Logan draft.

Rule #3: Supplements don't help much

The Dodgers are lucky to have a supplemental first round pick after losing Derek Lowe, though Logan White's track record on such picks has been fairly disastrous.

In 2002, the Dodgers selected a tall lanky lefty out of Esperanza HS named Greg Miller. He threw in the upper 80s, touched the low 90s but he was projectable and could spin a nice curve. The next year, he began the season in Vero Beach, holding his own against much older competition. And then, he took off. The 18 year old was promoted to Double A Jacksonville and he became one of the most dominant pitchers in the minors. His fastball velocity jumped, with him regularly touching the mid 90s. He picked a slider that turned into a devestating breaking ball. He was looking like the second coming of Sandy Koufax. Then...it happened. A pain in his shoulder. No one knew what it was. Exploratory surgery was performed but a solid dianosis wasn't given. He was never the same. To this day, he still owns a mid 90s fastball and a filthy slider, but once it leaves his hand God knows where it's going. Once considered a crown jewel in the Dodgers' system, Greg is now lucky if he can go an inning without issuing a walk.

In 2004, the Dodgers selected VCU RHP Justin Orenduff. His career started well and he quickly moved up to Double A, but a shoulder injury that required surgery sidelined him for most of the 2006 season and he hasn't been the same since. Now back down at Inland Empire, it's a longshot that Justin makes the major leagues.

In 2005, the Dodgers selected Tennessee RHP Luke Hochevar. It seemed like a steal at the time, since Hochevar was regarded by some as the best pitcher in the draft. So why would he fall to the 40th pick of the draft? Here's the short answer: Scott Boras. Here's the long answer: Scott Boras regularly scoffs at MLB's "slotting system", where the league will suggest how much teams should pay a draft pick. Boras also insists that his big name draft clients receive major league contracts, which isn't such a bad idea. However, when rumors of Hochevar's bonus demands circulated through front offices, teams backed off. It's rumored that then GM Paul DePodesta pushed for the Dodgers to select Hochevar and, at one point, the move seemed to work out as LA believed they had a deal in place with the college junior. But as a scout drove to deliver the contract in person, Luke absconded only to surface days later and ultimately renegged on the deal. Hochevar would re-enter the draft the next year and reached a pre-draft deal with the Royals to become the #1 overall pick. That led to Andrew Miller falling to the Tigers, allowing the Dodgers the chance to draft Clayton Kershaw.

In 2006, after selecting Kershaw and junior college RHP Bryan Morris, the Dodgers took a flier on Evansville Central HS IF/OF Preston Mattingly. Yes, Mattingly, as in son of Donnie Baseball. The bloodlines were there, the athleticism was there, the frame was there. Everything was there...except that insigificant ability to actually play the game of baseball. Preston didn't remind scouts of his dad, in that he's 6'3 and 200 pounds, a very good athlete and much faster than his father ever was. But the bat was, and still is, a big question. Having grown up in Indiana, Preston didn't see the best of competition. He didn't do the showcase circuit and didn't travel to tournaments. So when the understandibly raw teen first saw professional pitching, he was completely lost. This season has been an improvement, though not enough so to warrant any type of optimism about young Mattingly's ultimate future.

So who are the Dodgers going to pick?

No idea. It's hard enough to project the first 10 picks, let alone the first round. With 35 players coming off the board ahead of them, the Dodgers are probably hoping someone they like falls. But just for fun, I'll list the names of some guys I think the Dodgers could be looking at, with some other prospects I like.

Matt Hobgood, RHP (Norco HS, Norco CA)
Hobgood is a workhorse who works mainly off two pitches. His fastball doesn't have the best velocity, but he's consistently in the low 90s with it and gets fantastic movement. He also throws a very good curveball, one of the best among high school pitchers. His mechanics are said to be better than most prep arms. Matt has practically no projection left in him physically at 6'4 245 lbs, so what you see is what you get. He also has command/control problems, so he'll have to work on throwing better pitches and consistency. Overall, he's bigger than the Dodgers normally like, but the arm strength and breaking ball are there.

Chad James, LHP (Yukon HS, Yukon OK)
James is a guy who probably won't be there at #36, but I can dream right? He's a tall, projectable lefty who already throws in the low to mid 90s and has room for more. His curveball is a good pitch now and his changeup is better than what most high schoolers have. He needs to work on consistency with his stuff and command, but that can be said about almost any draft pick.

Garrett Gould, RHP (Maize HS, Maize KS)
Gould has a chance to be the first player from Kansas to go in the first round in 16 years and he probably will. He's got a projectable 6'4, 190 lbs frame and already touches the mid 90s. His curveball is one of the best in the draft and he's a fine athlete. His delivery needs some work and he doesn't have the experience of most other top prep pitchers in the class, so he may need longer to develop.

Madison Youginer, RHP (Mauldin HS, Mauldin SC)
Younginer has been hard to see this spring, mainly due to the fact that he's been used primarily as a reliever, which is bizarre for a top prospect. However, he may be the best arm strength guy in the draft (outside of Strasburg, of course), with a fastball that regularly registers in the mid 90s and a power breaking ball. Madison has some issues with his delivery, where he pushes off his landing leg and spins off to first base. His arm works well though, and he's athletic, so some adjustments shouldn't be much of a problem.

Slade Heathcott, OF (Texas HS, Texarkana TX)
Slade piqued my interest after I read Jon Mayo's scouting report. He's got 5 tool potential, with advanced hitting ability and plus power at the plate. In the field, he has great speed in spite of undergoing ACL surgery just 7 months ago. He covers plenty of ground and has a very strong arm. He's got a bit of an injury history, though it isn't all his fault, and some off the field issues that teams will look into. But the tools put him up there with any prep OFer not named Donovan Tate. The Dodgers would be lucky to nab him with one of their second round picks, though there's a chance that a team could take him in the late first.

David Nick, 2B (Cypress HS, Cypress CA)
Just 2 years ago, Cypress HS produced the #3 overall pick in the draft, Cubs 3B Josh Vitters. Nick isn't the same prospect, though he does offer an intriguing toolset. Currently a SS, David doesn't have the tools to handle the position as a pro. But moving over to 2B would save some value in his bat, which is a plus tool. He also has good speed. Nick could be an option for the Dodgers in the 3rd round as an offensive minded 2B.

Richie Shaffer, 3B (Providence HS, Providence NC)
Coming into the season Shaffer was ranked #50 on Baseball America's Top 100 prospect list for the '09 draft. However, a broken hamate bone has left Richie swinging one-handed and has drastically tempered his draft stock. When he's healthy, Shaffer can flat out hit. His build and swing remind me of Josh Vitters, though he's not at that level. He can handle third for now but some scouts see him growing out of the position. If he's signable in the first 5 rounds, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

That's all for now. Coming up next are reviews of the Dodgers' big league squad and minor league prospects.

Player of the Day - Scott Elbert, LHP

Scooter is gettin his groove back. After struggling in his second taste of of the show, Elbert has struggled through some adversity in his third go-round in Double A. However, today was different. Scott carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning, before a leadoff single broke up the bid and he was pulled after recording an out and walking his third batter. I still think he has a future with the Dodgers, though I'm not sure if it's in the rotation or the pen.

Player(s) of the Day - JonMichael Redding and Chris Withrow, RHPs

One of the better starts of the year for Redding, who's been very up and down this season. He lasted only 1.1 innings and allowed 6 earned runs in his last start, but gave up just 4 ER in 17 innings prior to that. He loves pitching at home, posting a 2.42 ERA in Midland compared to an 8.44 mark on the road.

Withrow has also struggled in May, so it's nice to see him with another dominant performance. He's allowed just 2 earned runs and struck out 15 batters in his last 10.1 innings. Chris' main problem is walking lefties; he's surrendered 13 free passes in 18.2 innings against them. This will improve if he develops his changeup into a reliable offering.

Finally, a good start from Nate. The 19 year old Tommy John survivor finished last year with a flourish, repeatedly hitting 96mph with his fastball in his final outing. This season, success hasn't come so easy to the youngster, as he's only reached 5 innings three times in 8 starts. Eovaldi has plenty of fastball to get by in the low minors, but he needs to work very hard on developing his secondary pitches if he plans on sticking around.

He still K's too much and walks too little, but the kid sure has some pop. While the average has dipped, Pedro seems to have found his power stroke in May by clubbing 6 HR and 4 doubles. Baez is still far from a finished product, which is a bit troubling given his age (he's already 21), but the Dodgers can afford to be patient with him to see if the tools turn into skills.

Buss was a player I liked out of USC last year and I was glad the Dodgers drafted him. He needs to work on hitting lefties but his overall numbers are nothing to sneeze at.

Preston missed a few weeks, not sure about the injury, but he's back and hitting over .300. He's hit safely in 9 of his last 10, with multi-hit efforts in 3 of his last 4. Now here's the bad news. His BABIP is .421, he's walked once and struck out 33 times in 23 games. So while the batting average is nice, it's not something to get excited about.

Hopefully the Dodgers are forcing him to use his secondary pitches more, which is resulting in more walks and hopefully allowing him to develop from a thrower into a pitcher.

Johnson took a 1-hit shutout into the 9th inning, before a leadoff double would score with 2 outs and end his chance at a complete game. Still, the 21 year old right-hander has quietly put together a strong season in his second go-round at High A. It was Stevie's second 10 strikeout effort this year and he has 59 K's in 44 innings. A few less walks and home runs would go a long way in his development.

Player of the Day - Trayvon Robinson, OF

Tray hasn't run nearly as much as I've expected, especially given his .360 OBP. He's been caught 7 times in 20 attempts, so he definitely needs to improve on his success rate. Robinson's power has been down this month and his strikeouts are up, yet he's still managing to bat over .300. So how is he still doing so well? 5 letters: B-A-B-I-P (Batting Average on Balls In Play). One of the most important tools in evaluating prospects is seeing how lucky they get. In spite of a line drive rate of less than 10%, Tray's BABIP is an astounding .413. His average on flyballs alone is .541, more than twice as high as normal. Unless he cuts down on the strikeouts and walks more, this type of production shouldn't be expected down the road.

Gotta give my boy props for taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning today. Clay was wild and inefficient as usual, but he was hitting spots when he needed to and blowing his fastball by guys. As long as he keeps his mechanics straight and keeps developing that changeup, the sky is the limit for him.

Player of the Day - Tony Delmonico, C

Second day in a row that Tony's reached base 4 times. Two of those hits, including a double, and the walk came against rehabbing Tigers' starter Jeremy Bonderman. Delmonico ranks 4th in the Midwest league in OBP and 6th in OPS, though two other Loons are 1 and 2 in that category (Pedroza and Russell). He's also 14th in strikeouts, behind Pedroza and Russell again. The trio could be a lot more productive if they stop whiffing so much.

Player of the Day - Tony Delmonico, C

Reaching base 4 times is nothing to sneeze at, though Delmonico's opening day performance was a big tease. While the .311 batting average may look good on the surface, it belies his massive strikeout total (34 times in 34 Games). He's walking a lot, which is a good thing, but his power has really dropped off this month. It could be the grind of catching, even if he's getting regular days off. This year is more about learning anyway, so take whatever offense he gets as a plus.

Josh has changed since his injury, having gone from a power-hitter to an OBP machine. The 22 year old has walked an impresive 23 times in 33 games, boasting a .418 average which is 10th in the Southern League. His isolated power is down, though not horrible. And he only has 2 home runs through his first 110 at bats. If the power comes around and he keeps walking, Bell's value will skyrocket.

It's a toofer. Baez fell a triple short of the cycle, hitting his 5th HR tying him with Steven Caseres and Scott Van Slyke for the team lead. He's still struggling against righties and striking out too much, but the tools are there. And then there's Martin, who came off his worst outing with arguably his best. Ethan now has 40 K's in 30 innings, almost twice the number of hits he's allowed (21). It shouldn't be long before he finds himself in Double A.

Not the best prospect on the team or in the system, but he's had a very up and down season with moments of dominance sprinkled in between getting absolutely crushed. In his first, third, fifth and seventh starts, he's given up just 4 earned runs in 21 innings. However, his second, fourth and sixth starts have yielded 17 earned runs in 10.1 innings. Not as great a coincidence as you may think; the odd numbered starts have taken place on the road and the evens were at home. He's going to need to find some consistency in order to make the jump to the bigs.

The second 5 hit effort of the seaosn for Scottie, he saw his average soar .033 points today. His 12 doubles lead the Cal League and his batting average rates sixth. However, I still have reservations about how real this production is. Coming into the day, Van Slyke's BABIP was an incredible .433 in spite of just a 14.3% LD rate. He desperately needs to reverse his walk/strikeout trends.

Player of the Day - Pedro Baez, 3B

Going into 2008, Baez was the Dodgers' 10th best prospect according to Baseball America. But trouble handling Low A pitching dropped him in the rankings. He did decently well after a demotion to the hitter friendly Pioneer League and has started off surprisingly well in High A this season. His plate discipline is still a problem and will be the skill that determines how far he goes in pro ball.

Player of the Day - Steven Caseres, 1B

Caseres was a guy I liked as a 9th round pick from last year. He's got the frame and the swing that just ooze power. His rookie season was a little disappointing and he hasn't gotten off to the best start this spring. Hitting just .063 against lefties isn't helping, but he's hitting righties to the tune of a .904 OPS. Unless he starts hitting southpaws, Steve will have a hard time finding a full time gig.

Player of the Day - Tim Sexton, RHP

The 25th rounder from 2007 is putting together some solid numbers in the Cal League, a difficult task for a pitcher. Tim has shown that he has good control with the ability to induce some groundballs, but his upside is limited. He's been compared to Bronson Arroyo for his bean-pole stature and mediocre stuff, and he wouldn't be more than a back of the rotation starter if he makes it to the show.

Elbert took his demotion in stride, allowing just an unearned run in his first start since April 15th. Hopefully he can get his mechanics worked out and find some consistency in throwing strikes. I believe he'll be up again, though it could be a while.

Player of the Day - Josh Lindblom, RHP

Not the flashiest statline, but the big righty produced his second straight strong start (double alliteration!!!) and induced 9 groundballs. His 4.70 ERA is distorted due to one really bad outing (3 IP, 7 ER); in his four other starts, his ERA is less than half (2.25). While he only struck out one batters, it's good to see Lindblom pitching to contact and trusting his stuff instead of trying to strike everyone out. If he keeps pitching like this, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in LA by the All Star break.
